Tragedy Strikes Down Gasteraloe

Funny thing was, I was laying in bed this morning looking at this plant thinking about how I never fell in love with this plant. I like Gasteraloes, so I bought it when I saw him, but we never connected. I decided I will sell it at the Cactus & Succulent Society Spring Sale. As I continued to look at it from my position, I saw a yellowing leaf, then another. I jumped up to inspect and found rotting leaves.

So, I immediately unpotted it. The soil was good, actually time to water dry. I removed those leaves, I couldn't see the where the rot was coming from at first, but what I did see was the problem. Around the stem there was still some of the original potting soil it came him.

I know this grower. It's the largest tropical plant grower on the lower mainland BC that serves every grocer & garden centre in BC, Alberta and probably the Yukon. They have kilometres after kilometres of greenhouses all for tropical plants. They also grow succulents in the exact same soil as their tropicals.

SHOOT!!! I keep removing leaves and find the core of the stem is rotted. I removed almost all of the plant. Now, just because my pride has been tarnished, I am determined to save this evil little plant.

I will let it air dry for a week or more. Then put it in dry soil for the next 2 months or more. A little spritz occasionally. If I think about it.

If it survives I will pot it in a little pot, get it fully rooted and sell it!!!

Don't worry the lion is safe. I will find him a new home.

Rotten Core and below it you can see the peat that I missed. It's quite a bit. Sloppy potting. I need to go back and take potting 101 over again. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.
