Fisher Paykel GWL15 Washer Noisy Pump Buzz During Rinse Cycle

I have a Fisher Paykel GWL15 Washer that has noisy pump. Its new, I have tried several new pumps and ALL of them make this buzzing noise during the rinse cycle and at first in the spin. I CAN stop the buzz by pushing up on the pump/fan shaft but it goes back to buzzing/vibrating soon after. (Its NOT the bearing.) I disassembled the new pump and everything looks great. Bearings are fine, it spins freely. Thinking maybe the pump was not being powered correctly, I got a new mainboard from FP. I have had the whole machine apart and back together. Basket out, cleaned the pump housing from the inside. There is NOTHING impeding the pump impeller.

Any thoughts on this??? I am stumped!

Its hard to hear on the video but its rather loud in person.

The original style pump went NLA in 2018 when the supplier in Italy shut down. F&P has sourced a replacement now from a different supplier. Looks like that's what you have. I haven't yet run into any so don't know if they may just be noisy. You might consider calling F&P directly to get their response, perhaps the phone rep could get a listen at it.

Thanks! I tried three pumps all from Italy. I contacted FP, suggested they may have manufacturing issues and sent the video and they said I should get a tech out to look at it and diagnose the problem. Not super helpful.

That seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a noise that doesn't appear to have any effect on how clean the clothes come out. I would have given up and just ignored the buzz after the first pump replacement, if not before. But that's me.

Thanks David! I don’t disagree however, randomly it appears the impeller freezes and causes the jam error, overheats and.... smell of burning electrical, spin it to get it going and onward it goes. Very frustrating.

Did you report that aspect of it to F&P? That's should be considered a defect, not an acceptable operational characteristic.

randomly it appears the impeller freezes

So it's not just noise. Sorry, I didn't realize that.

We're talking about the pump impeller, right? Are you sure it's random, and not associated with some state of the washer, some point in the cycle?

It's hard to imagine that every replacement pump would have the same defect, but I suppose it's possible. I'd test the pump(s) outside the washer and see how they sound, probably also measure the current they draw that way.

I wonder if there might be some kind of restriction that's (over)loading the pump at times.

I might monitor the pump's current during a cycle, and note how it changes over time.

Since I don't own one of these washers, this is all off the top of my head. Maybe someone else has more experience with them, and more specific troubleshooting methods.

DavidR, I have three F&P washers with this type of pump. The pump either runs at full speed or it's off. The control board cycles it off for maybe 1/2 a second at a time every 10 to 15 seconds during drain periods while the basket is floated as a method of helping lint pass through ... but there's no instance where it's fed reduced power. It has thermal overheat protection but in that case it turns off and stays off until it cools and the protector resets. The entire machine doesn't go dead except older model GWL10 which has a different electrical design that uses the (230v) pump circuit as part of the mains power supply.

My prior posts don’t seem to have been added So hopefully this isn’t a duplicate. The noise occurs mostly when the pump has removed all the water in the rinse cycle. So the impeller must vibrate funny when it has no significant amount of water to pump. I’m not sure why it overheats randomly. It’s dry so it’s isn’t leak related. I haven’t seen a trend. Hopefully it doesn’t kill itself

I monitored this issue and found the pump motor locks up at the beginning of the rinse cycle and hums as if there is something blocking it. If I turn it manually from under the tub it gets unstuck, spinning freely and will complete the cycle buzzing as the tub gets toward empty. if there is no obstruction, why would the motor lock up?

Beginning of the Rinse cycle ... immediately when the first Rinse light turns on after the wash period? That's when the wash water drains. Rinse Cycle is a catch-all term, several functions occur during that phase.

Are you sure there's no obstruction? Could be lint/strings accumulated under the pump impeller or some other debris in that area. Only way to know is 1) remove the pump and check the impeller and up in the outlet accordingly, and/or 2) go in from the top (remove the inner drum) to check the outlet area from that direction.

Otherwise the pump bearings may be going bad. That will put it in a bind, causing overheating. Leaking may not necessarily occur.

when I replaced the main board and pump (several times with new replacements) I cleared all debris from the bottom AND removed the inner tub and cleaned and cleared any debris from the top. I snaked the drain tube just in case. The pump tests flawlessly with the diagnostics test. The pump spins freely but I disassembled it anyway and everything looks good. It seems like a manufacturing issue, possibly over heating. F&P wants me to get a tech out to look at it but there isn’t anything to this system and thats why I like it. A new mainboard should fix any potential voltage issues even though this pump is basically on or off.

Ooops. I lost track of to which thread/question I was replying here, didn't read up to refresh the memory. Sounds like there may be some quality-control/manufacturing issues with the new pump supplier ... or you have a board issue. Have you tried running it in Diagnostic Mode for a while, 20 mins or so, to see if it shuts off, and perhaps monitoring the current/voltage at the pump to check if it fluctuates?

I just replaced my pump shipped directly from Fisher & Paykel this weekend. My pump does the exact same noise intermittently during the rinse cycle. Did you find any remedy to this noise?

I never did figure it out. It didn’t really make sense none of the replacement pumps or the motherboard fixed the noise. I had tash tub out and the thing completely taken apart so I know it wasn’t something in the Way. ... The beauty of that washer is super simple. Which makes this problem frustrating. I eventually just got rid of it

As discussed above, indications are that the noise is a characteristic of the design of the newer-style pump, which is sourced from a different supplier than the original. I don't have any hands-on experience with them to experiment whether there's a remedy.

We seem to have the same problem. The noise is very loud at the end of the rinse cycle, especially when the after volume is reduced . We have tried 2 pumps, and they make the same noise. Do we just live with it?

We don’t feel like paying a tech, especially since both the replacement we purchased, and the one they sent us to replace the one we purchased seem to make the same noise. This is not the noise the old pump made, which was a screech as the machine was filling, that prompted the purchase in the first place! Like you stated earlier, I’m not sure there is anything a tech can do! My husband actually sent a link to this thread to FP, as you captured the noise better than we did. At least we know we’re not crazy.

Dry bushings in pump just oil them
