Your tv should be at a height where it is most comfortable for viewing from where you will be sitting to view it. If that means immediately above your console, at least the wires will not be visible. If that means higher, you will want to find a way to hide the wires.

Try sitting where you intend to sit while watching the tv to decide that. You might consider using a tiny key ring sized laser light flashlight (available at Dollar Tree) to point to what height is most comfortable and, if there is no one available to mark that spot for the center of your tv, you could have a yard stick or paper or other item with markings taped to the wall so you can note the height.

Very handsome piece, that might be considered a bit too high.

Make sure your allow room for a sound bar under your TV.

At 32 inches the media center should be fine. Should you opt for a sound bar, there are many that are sized to fit between the bottom of the TV and the console. You can also mount it above the TV but the sound will not be as good.

Thank you for your response! We went with the legged console (although I do love the low one) because we have a wall vent that was too hard to move.
We have had the tv sitting on the console for a few months and and it is comfortable for viewing, luckily! I was having the tv mounted (all cords will be in the walls and won’t show) for a cleaner look and was wondering how much wall or white space between the tv and the top of the console would be appropriate. I was thinking about six inches? I have seen quite a few pictures where the tv is way too high above the console, but I also don’t want the gap to be too small....

You don't actually NEED any space; you could actually sit your tv atop the console. Hanging it on the wall above it though, I'd say "less is more" applies-- why show more naked wall than necessary for the tv to be at a comfortable height.

If it's hanging on the wall, it shouldn't be touching the console but hovering just above it would be fine.

If your tv comes with feet or a stand of any kind, first try standing it atop your console and see how comfortable that height is for you. If that height is comfortable, hang it that height.

I lay in bed when the installer was doing my wall mounted bedroom television and he held it up and down until I told him what was the best in terms of viewing height.

I got a Bose sound bar which is quite small and just fits innocuously under the television. I don't have the need for super high fidelity sound but the sound output of thin screen televisions is awful and the thinner they are, the worse they are because the speakers are so small. Mine was a $200 Bose model - didn't want additional speakers but just one small discrete piece of equipment.

Wouldn't wires be hung inside the wall and then snake out from the bottom?

I have always thought much lower unless I am not following. For a 50 inch screen, which is approx 26" high, then you are saying it should be about 47 inches from the floor? that seems QUITE high. I am asking because I have a 50 inch tv and it is hung about 38 inches from the floor (still in the market for a console). It works fine for us, but others have said it's on the high side.

should look like this (you don't want a large gap) since the console is 32", it will be similar to this look (this console is about 30" high)

As a rule, a 42” television should be mounted about 56 inches from floor to TV center, a 55” TV should be around 61 inches, a 65” TV should be around 65 inches' floor to center, and a 70” television should be mounted about 67 inches to the center of the screen.

@ salonva, the height is based on 18" to the top of the sofa/chair cushion plus 24" for the eye-height of a person sitting there, which is 42"; others say 40" is optimum eye-height. People are not all the same height so this is a general guideline. My own TV has only a 32" picture and sits on a TV cabinet. The center of the screen is 43" above the floor. The bottom of the frame sits about 34" above the floor. Ultimately, this is a personal decision. If you are happy with the height of your TV that is what counts. You just don't want the screen to be too low or too high which stresses your neck. Some installers are recommending even more height for really large TVs so they feel more theater like. Be careful, very few people like viewing a movie from the front row of the theater.

IMO no gap so that you never see the wires and I find pefect viewing height is the center of the screen is at eye level when you are seated so that changes a bit with the size of the TV I find a 32” hight for the TV cabinet a bit high but that is me.

If it's going in a bedroom you want it higher than normal or else you'll be craning your neck to see the TV between your toes.

First comes function. Never put function secondary to appearance.

This TOO high !! You will tweak your necks at these heights. Most doesn't realized the above quote is from THX Society where it presumed this is a home theater setup with a reclining seat of at least 15 degrees. More realistic for your sofas is 5 degrees, so a 65" TV should be centered at 51", 60" TV should be 50", 55" TV should be at 49".

I’m reading this thread in 2026, so it’s all new to me. My husband is 6’2”, and he likes the top of the 70” tv to be like 72” AFF. If that makes him happy, so be it, I’ll make it work. I’d like it to be a bit lower, myself.

I know there are some folks who wouldn't dare mount a tv above a fireplace because it causes neck strain. I've mounted the tv above the fireplace in two homes now and, honestly, it isn't a problem at all. So, am not sure the hard and fast rules about mounting heights is really all that hard and fast.
