-I'd paint the entire room white, with the exception of the tray ceiling inset, which I would paint blue or gray.

-when you replace the art, know the the current art is hung too high. Center of art should be 55"60" high (Wainscot could force it higher).

If reupholstering the chairs is a possibility, I would do that also.

Something like this with more modern touches like the mirror and chandelier. An updated paint job or wallpaper, as well as new curtains (solid or a modern print) would help a lot.

Tan-gold is bold.... just wanted to rhyme that. Anyway, idk if the way of painting the rim near the ceiling is working.... there are angles in the room, though chairs are not. Size idk, but edges in this -

This type color might not be too intense and eye-troubling, if gold upper [near ceiling] and curtains aren't there.

To me, this one depends on style of rest of your house. With warm paint to blend, it won't have too contemporary it might with greys / blue paint. But solid, heathered rug to transition.

Interestingly, the coordinating color, Pale Moss, looks like your chairs on my monitor. Paint a big white poster board with Argos, leaving a large white border and bring it into the dining room. Move it around for a few days/nights in different light and weather, and see how it looks with the chairs.

Would you be open to reupholstering the chairs? I think if you did that you could update to a transitional style, but as it stands now the burgundy patterned Tuscan fabric circa 2002 is what is holding back the room, in my opinion. I get wanting to keep the chairs and table because your grandmother gave them to you, but reupholstering them could do wonders!

All these ideas are amazing. Thank you so much! I love the color palette of blue/gray. But was always worried if that would complement the dark wood and yellow/golden chairs.

I think all these color recommendations will go a long way in making the room brighter and more cozy. Right now it's just a dated museum room! Lol.

Re upholstering the chairs to a modern geometric pattern will change the entire room. THEN change other elements to compliment later.

I would strongly suggest approaching this a bit differently than your list. Why? Because unless you are planning to reup those chairs, I don't think that list will give you the more transitional space you want at all.

That said, your dining set is lovely and well worth recovering. First. While the chairs are out being recovered, I'd prime all the walls, extend the curtain rod by about 6" on either side, and get some paint samples to compare. Combining a dining set like yours in a way that is elegant and transitional is actually pretty easy to do. Some things to employ are a more modern tablescape, a fair bit of negative space (both on walls and surfaces), and a chandelier that evokes a more contemporary vibe. Basically you need a planned approach that doesn't start with buying stuff or painting the walls gray....even if you eventually choose gray for the walls :-)

Yes....you have to approach this as a whole and in conjunction with the rest of your house. Will the chairs be uphostered or not and can you show a photo of other rooms in your home?

Set is wonderful foundation as it is. Many colors go with it - even eggplant, even grayed and whitened a bit.
