Your question reminded me of the technique an old gardening neighbor had for low growing vines that he wanted off the ground. He bent cattle panel fencing at 90 ° and laid it over the plants. It isn't what you are talking about and seemed to me that the old fellow showed a good deal of resourcefulness to have bent that heavy wire so precisely!

I'm wondering how much the closeness of the other vines, and their shade, encouraged the vining of the nasturtiums.

I’m not going to be much help either, lol. There are different types of nasturtiums and they grow to different heights. I’ve grown the bush type and some vining ones, but my vining ones just crept along the ground and didn’t climb up anything. Of course, I didn’t try to get them to climb. I love their late season color, and how easy they are to grow from seed. I think it would be a great idea to pair them with something on a trellis—maybe sweet peas (either annual or perennial) since they bloom pretty early?
