Window Treatment Help!

We just remodeled our kitchen to white and got new lighter furniture. Our house backs to open space, so we don't need covering for privacy reasons. If we do curtains, they will be for decoration, but I don't want the living room to look too 'heavy' with too many curtains. We do need something that will cut the glare in the middle of the day if someone is watching TV. We have a couple of smaller windows as well, so I'm thinking some kind of roman shade situation and curtains for softness on the bigger windows? We want to keep it bright, airy and a little modern. I don't want a big 'roll' of something at the top of the window. And, are those kind of shades more modern than doing a sheer curtain under the heavier curtain.......to just close the sheers when we need? That also doesn't solve for the smaller windows. FInally, we will have crown molding around the top of the ceiling. Help? I'm all over the place.
