Will this modification hold an 85” tv?

I would like to increase the width of my tv cabinet so that the tv can stand on it. I really like the current cabinet and don’t want to take up any more floor space with a larger cabinet.

This is a link to one tv model I’m considering:

The tv sits on two legs, angled outwardly, in which the width is 68 ¼ inches and the depth is 15.625 inches.

Will a 70 x 19 inch piece on nominal ¾ inch pine plywood fix the problem? The result of this idea means that part of the legs will sit on the plywood but extend about 5 inches on each side of the cabinet. I don’t know how much of the legs will sit on that portion of plywood that rests directly on the cabinet. The tv weighs 106.2 pounds.

My concern is that the free edges of plywood will bend over time. I don’t care about the tv extending past the base, although I’d consider cutting angles on the front edges of a longer piece.

If this is a not a good idea, what else would you suggest?

Here’s a sketch of what I want to do. Please note that the 16 inch depth of the cabinet is the narrowest (there are cutouts at the front corners); most of the cabinet is 19 inches deep.

Those "leashes" are also used to stop that tv from killing kids climbing on the furniture that the tv is on.

Can't do that. TV would go in front of drapes.

In that case, it would be smarter to buy a larger cabinet to place the tv on so that it’s properly supported.

I don’t think that 5-6” of overhang will be an issue. You’ll want to make sure that the plywood is attached to the cabinet, perhaps by some screws from the underside of the cabinet top into the plywood.

How about mounting a plywood "wall" to the back of the cabinet, then mounting the TV on that? Or, two vertical 2x4s spaced to match the mounting holes on the TV? In either case, you could run the wires from the TV to the cabinet behind the plywood or 2x4s. I think that would look much better than a plywood top to the cabinet. Can you post some photos?

Your idea has merit.

I'm rethinking my idea. The problem is the lack of wall space because of windows, drapes, and artwork, and the need to paint in a few years. The tv needs to sit away(?) from the wall.

Mebbe the safest idea is to bite the bullet and get another tv console.

The specific TV you referenced, the main support of the legs is more than 6 inches from the edge of the TV meaning your current cabinet would supporting most if not all of the weight. The wings on the legs are just to provide support so it doesn't tip over. I would not be concerned at all about your plan. If you had any doubt, or picked a different tv with legs closer to the edge, you could add some corbels or something of that nature that would add more support. I would also make sure to use quality 7 ply furniture grade plywood. 6 inches of overhang, and quality ply will be plenty strong.

Re tv on furniture, I live in earthquake country. My television has a couple of leashes. Designed to prevent tip over.
