Off Center Window AND Sloped Ceiling

Happy New Year! I am in the process of finishing our master bedroom in a cape-style home. The room is large enough to hold a king, but creates an off centered window, along with the slant ceiling. The layout pictured is only way 2 nightstands fit. I’ve tried to add balance with matching night stands, lights, and floral arrangements, but the wall behind the bed still looks boring/empty. Any suggestions? Was thinking about potentially adding picture frames (all the same frame in various sizes) to help fill in the weird spaces, but I am concerned it will be too much. Any help is much appreciated!

Walls are “light French grey” (blue/grey).

Move the bed over to the right and get rid of the night stand on the right. Maybe do a lamp on the left night stand and a wall sconce on the right that are the same color/style to balance. I'm not a fan of the lamps you have now--they look somewhat clutter-y. Also, you could install a narrow nightstand or shelf on the right, if having a space for a book/clock/tissues is something you need there.

The important thing is that the lamps (whether you use a standing and a table lamp or a sconce and a table lamp) is that the shades are at the same height for balance. I know some people are not comfortable with exactly matching things on both sides of the bed, but as long as there is balance... PS - I tried to find a sconce and matching table lamp, but I could not.

@Violetsnapdragon - thanks so much for the quick reply! 100% agreed on moving bed over and new lights (I don’t like those either - having a hard time finding ones my husband will agree to!)

Embrace the asymmetry. Think about the entire tableau. Art, a pillow, and not matching lamps.

This would drive me nuts! Do you really need that window? I would cover it up with headboard, paint it the same color as the rest of the room , center the bed and get a pair of beautiful lamps!

I meant bead board! Auto correct;)!

Pretty room! I don't know if it would work with a king size bed, but could you angle the bed in the corner? That would leave a window on each side and maybe room for nightstands or floor lamps with trays. Please don't cover the window as suggested above. I love windows! Here's an article with some ideas.

You don’t need to remove the window. Just the trim around the window. This way the outside of the house stays the same. You can apply wood sheathing and batting board trim then paint it all out the same as the rest of the room . It would make a nice accent wall.

There are other windows in this room !

Don't cover the window!! Narrower nightstands are your friend. If that doesn't get you enough space, you might want to look into changing out the bedframe or at least the headboard. You could find one with more of an arch so it doesn't cover up the window. Wayfair and other online sites allow you to search by height and shape etc.

you have a very lovely room. I especially like the wall with the window seat and book cases. I agree that moving the bed to the right and removing one nightstand could work well. in addition, i would suggest rethinking the bedside table you put on the left side of the bed. you have furniture that is very matchy matchy and heavy. your wall color, overhead light and white trim counterbalances the heaviness for sure but I think a couple more tweaks to the furniture could help. I would suggest some type of textural side table or a different shape like round that is open underneath with no drawers might help. I also think the mirror above the dresser is to large. maybe a mirror with a metal frame that is thinner could work. heres a few inspiration pics for a side table.

That room is not large enough to accommodate that much furniture. Any possibility of eliminating the dresser and mirror? Then I' place the bed on the short wall with the nightstand and drape the total wall

Hang fabric all across the back wall instead of calling out the off center window. If you did an up light on the right, behind the fabric, it could even mimic the daylight coming through.

Is the other window (the one on the wall to the right of the bed - as you face the bed) centered on that wall? Would there be room to center the bed on that wall and that window, if it's centered, and move the dresser to the wall where the bed currently is?

If you want to keep the window I think you need to push the bed over towards the outside wall! Loose the nightstands! Get rid of the large dresser as it is in the way. Get a lighter , lower dresser for under the window. The large mirror will have more room on the wall without the dresser under it so you can keep it.

I realize it makes it hard to get in and out of the bed this way but if you want that window so be it;)!

I think your furniture is too heavy for your space and the look you're trying to achieve. The wall color is beautiful. First, get rid of the standing lamps. They are not suited to a bedroom. Get smaller nightstands and push the bed as far over to the right as you can. These nightstands in white could work. https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/bayou-breeze-aylin-2-drawer-nightstand-bbze2281.html?piid=22321307 You need matching lamps on the nightstands and I'd actually put long drapes on the windows, even if they hung behind the headboard. I think you could use a simpler bed, but since you have it, let's try to make it work. The white mirror over the dresser is far too large. Swap it out with a round one (not matching the dresser color). Post pictures when you have moved the bed so we can see how much room you've got to work with.

Bring the eye down is the trick in this room. Lower profile bed. Simple lines. Match window treatments to wall color.

    I think @roarah nailed it.

Thank you so much to everyone for your comments, really appreciate the help! To answer a few questions - there are 3 total windows in the bedroom, one on both the left and right side of the bed, and the stubborn one that is off centered behind the bed. Unfortunately, the only way the bed will fit in the room is on this wall.

I agree with the people that said take out the nightstand on the right of the bed and put in a floor lamp. Then on the other side where the window is, put a wider night stand with a table lamp on it that matches the floor lamp. I would agree that the mirror over the dresser is too big also, but that is an easy fix.

Should have mentioned we need to keep the dresser (we have one small closet in the bedroom!), but very open to changing the lights, nightstands, and mirror. With removing a nightstand there was room to but the bed on the opposite wall, but it just feels weird. Moved bed back and is now directly in the middle of the room (not too far off from the original post).

This idea only pale gray sheer curtain panel across the back that matches your walls (or plain white). What's somewhat off in the room is proportion. You have a huge headboard and footboard squeezed into a small space; night tables that are visually dark and too big; and the gigantic mirror over the dresser. Think about changing out the mirror and possibly painting the night tables white so they work with your bookcase.

    Beautiful room!

Also have sloped ceilings and have tried many different decorating methods.

If you want to de-emphasize the sloped asymmetry behind the head of bed, paint that wall the same color as the ceiling. Or paint ceiling the same color as the walls

@Allison Bakow - Ok, when you moved the bed in the picture above it is pretty much centered in front of the window. What looks wrong, is that the dresser is there too. What if you take the dresser out of that area (put the other nightstand back in ) and put the dresser on another wall (perhaps to the right of the off center window where the bed used to be). Would that work? Give it a try.

The asymmetry gives the room character. Beautiful room, beautiful color.

Put the bed on the diagonal. You can try this without any expense.

Remove the heavy bedside tables. The room is so airy, and the tables look dumpy IMO.

I like bed centered on big wall. It is what it is and crowding it to the right doesn’t help. I also couldn’t live without my nightstands for book, glasses, water at minimum. I would get 2 large matching lamps, a smaller mirror or artwork for over the dresser, and that garbage can has got to go, I’d replace with a wicker basket or something.

    Maybe a rug.

Hi! I’ve seen people put a large mirror in similar size to the window on the windowless side of the bed to make the two sides have symmetry. It kind of mimics the window. I don’t know how it would work here, but might be something to try? Good luck!

Not sure how much you want to spend on the project but here is something to consider. Have a carpenter gut the bookshelves and build in a dresser on each side. It might feel like you are removing some of the character of the room, but you still have the unusual ceiling and the adorable window seat. Make the fronts for the drawers decorative with moldings and interesting pulls. With two dressers you would achieve more clothing storage, and if you had the top a bit lower than the molding there would be room for deco items. Then you could put your bed on the centered window with drapes on either side the width of the bed. You would also have room for two nightstands and access to each side. Nightstands with shelves would accommodate your books. I would also get a lower headboard. If you get a different bed the existing light fixture might work. I also like the idea of painting your ceiling the same color as the walls. If you think that might be too dark, paint it half strength. Alternatively, I would do what Lynartist suggested. Lamps, mirror, etc can come after furniture placement is decided. Good luck, it's a lovely room!

Walls and ceiling best painted all same color. Works well. Flat or matte paint finish. I would put night stands in a guest room with dresser. Look for more narrow, lighter night stands or gently used antique ones. Look locally for nice Armoire that fits in room. It will provide much more storage than a dresser and they are not as deep. You could pick up used one and paint it wall color the glaze with transparent glaze for pretty but functional piece. They are going dirt cheap these days.

I don't know if this is a crazy idea, but what if you replaced the upholstered headboard with an open metal frame? Or push the bed to the right with a very narrow nightstand.

paint the wall and ceiling the same color, it will make the odd angles much less noticeable.

Take out the one nightstand and hang a corner shelf or little corner cabinet instead. Then you can move the bed over enough so someone can walk next to it.

I like the bed on the adjoining wall, though it might work better if you were to use both nightstands and move the large dresser somewhere else.
