New Year Garden Theme Swap 2020

It's that time of year for New Beginnings and a fresh start to a New Year!

So, let's share our love of seeds with one another by having a theme swap.

What is a theme garden swap. Well, it's any garden built around a particular theme. Probably the all-time classic one you have heard about is the herb garden, or the vegetable garden. You could build it around a color - moon garden (all white), love garden (all red). It can be any idea at all, really - be creative! Some people collect plants that have animal names (like tiger lily.) It is going to be lots of FUN!!!!

Sign up by January 13, 2020

List up to 5 theme gardens, and any particular seeds you might like for them. Then, watch others' posts and start gathering seeds for them.

You must designate seeds for a specific person, please put all seed packs for that person in one ziplock bag. Sorting and packing will go much faster that way.

You can add bonus packs that are ones that you are basically giving away (please include a sticky note with "Bonus" on them.) These may be bulk seeds. These will be posted and you will get to choose your BONUS!!

Seeds to be sent to me no later than by January 24th, so I can redistribute them, I plan to have the seeds in the mail back to you for an early February arrival date.

My Address: Tammy McClearen Box 1921 Seminole, Texas 79360

Acceptable seeds back to 2017. Make sure your seeds are dry unless they are to stay moist. Or if they require refrigeration let me know so that we can keep them viable.

Most importantly: Please include postage to equal the amount of postage or more it costs you to send your package.

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

Good morning everyone! Lots to be thankful for today. I am staying warm and cozy inside. We got about 4 inches of snow and suppose to get more tonight. Thankful I don’t have to get out in it or go anywhere. Sitting here pulling seeds and watching these large flakes fall. Beautiful!!

Newly fallen snow is beautiful. We used to get some now and then, but it has been a long time since that happened. I love to watch big fluffy flakes falling from the sky. I'm glad you don't have to be out and about in it.

Hope everyone is staying nice and cozy. We are headed for some cold temperatures this Friday with an expected high temperature of 19 and a low of 9. Then we will have some slight warm ups again. The winter this year has been very mild with only short periods of cold and then warmer temps. I am still doing some winter sowing through the weekend and over the next couple of weeks.

Tammy, I hope your weather is better although the snow us beautiful.

    Have a great weekend!

My seeds came today. Thank you so much to everyone who sent seeds for me and to Tammy for hosting the swap. Next month I'll be starting seeds - yeah!

My seeds came today as well. You all made some really neat choices that fit my themes well. I'm going to buy more seed flats tomorrow, and spend my day off on Monday planting, since it's supposed to rain all day. Thanks so much everyone!

I know it's too late, but I would like to be notified next time this happens! Ya'll enjoy your seeds!

Alana I will add you to my list. I usually have one in the fall and then again in the new year.

Wow! I am excited that everyone is already getting their packs.

Thank you you all again such a great group. I enjoyed it.

I can’t believe how quickly the seed packages have gotten to us and I am so glad to be a part of this group!

I got such a kick outta the seeds that matched my themes....especially the Rock ‘n Roll and Hansel-Gretal themes. Y’all are pretty clever and I just thank you all for everything you prepared for me.

Tammy, those bonus seeds are fabulous and you really sent an impressive amount! I appreciate you so much for your dedication to pull this all together. I hope all your wishes came true!

My seeds arrived today also. Such a happy surprise to see it in the mailbox! Tammy and all the other swappers, thank you so much. I haven't had a chance to look at all the types of seeds included in mine, but it was way more than I expected and I know I will love taking some time to look at each package and think about when and where to plant them. Thank you all so much for your generosity and to you especially, Tammy, for taking the time to do all this for us.

Tammy, my seeds were in the mailbox waiting for me when I returned home from a day trip with my family today. I haven't had a chance to go through all of them yet, but there are bunches of seeds for sure. I want to thank you Tammy for putting this together and all your hard work, time and dedication. And special thanks also to all the participants for the seeds you sent me. I loved thinking about the themes and planning and I can tell by the seeds I reviewed so far,
I have received lots of great seeds that match my themes. I am so grateful for everyone's generosity. This was so much fun!

    Happy Gardening!

I got a question for ya, Seed Givers -

I got a lot of those tiny ziplocks and my fat, calloused fingers just cannot open them. So I am transferring the seeds into other packaging until I can sow them. Some seeds I will have to give away as those plants won't grow in Florida, and I have a lot that will have to wait until September to sow for winter.

So I need to know what will be the best replacement packaging to use to keep my seeds healthy and viable....especially those that will be waiting until fall and Christmas swaps and times to sow. I sometimes have terribly low germination rate and wonder if it's the way the seeds have been stored.

    What do you guys do?

Before I used tiny ziploks...When I first started GardenWeb years ago...I folded and taped paper for my seeds and made sure to keep them in a dry space

I have made paper envelopes and stored them. But I also have plastic ziploc baggies that are about a 2x3 that I have transferred seeds into and they kept just fine. I keep most all my seed in a old refrigerator out in garage.

I prefer the little plastic ziplocks to keep out moisture. Also, I had a terrible weevil problem in some of my Hardy Hibiscus seeds in a paper bag. They escaped and had to be vacuumed. They were everywhere! Any little bugs should be contained in plastic but can chew right through paper.

That makes sense. I never would’ve considered insects as a threat to stored seed.

I was thinking of recycling the empty seed packs I got from Park’s.... they are sorta like foil on the outside.

Thank you so much Tammy I love all the seeds! Thank you to everyone for your generosity to share your seeds. I am excited to get started sowing some of these this week! Happy sowing! Kim

Hey just wanted to say I received my package, and thank you so much! I'm starting seeds in the greenhouse today. ☺️

Yeah, I prefer the tiny ziploks, too. I reuse the ones I have from trades as much as possible.
