Do you already know what furniture you are going to purchase? If not, we recommend actually starting with the rug and matching the colors/styles of the other elements of the room to that! What colors and/or styles do you have in mind?

I love warm colors...thinking espresso brown for couch and red accents.

I think this rug is absolutely beautiful!

Another option that adds tons of warmth is a shag.

I would remove the tv from the fireplace and put to the right in a cabinet. Put a loveseat where the brown chair is, add an end table to the right of it, then put the sofa next to it making an " L shape", facing the fireplace(where it is now). Where the windows are, put an accent chair with a table. ( I think the windows are being covered by the large loveseat and it throws off the balance of the room.

OR buy a sofa and two matching club chairs. Place one chair where the brown chair is, the other where the loveseat is, the sofa where it is now with a sofa table behind it. Put an end table by each chair, and a coffee table in front of the sofa. The rug, drapes, lighting and accessories should be done last.

I love shags! Hubby, not so much. :)

vsj, i like your last suggestion. I am thinking a couch and 2 chairs, no loveseat. The TV has to stay...I like how it centers the room and gives it a focal pnt

Have to agree with moving the TV. Why do you want that to be the focal point of such a beautiful room? It doesn't center the room because it's too small. You need something taller like a mirror or art work that extends higher into the room. You are lucky enough to have 9-ft ceilings take full advantage of them!!

The previous owner's TV was to the left, hiding that beautiful built in. (We finished it off with the doors and crown and arch at the top). With the tv to the left/right, the focal pnt of the fireplace is way off. The had their couch diagonally so they can watch tv

I could see that looking good! I agree with others that a good rug would really add warmth.

Float two identical sofas in an "L" with 2 swivel chairs making the "L" into a "U" on top of a beautiful, colorful and patterned area rug centered right in front of the FP. Build-in a swiveling wall mount with cabinetry underneath for TV on the right of FP. I'd have the chairs with backs to the window to allow both sofas to enjoy the view. Chairs can turn to it or to the conversation group.

LOVE your idea of a couch and two chairs as those are soooo much easier to work with in a room, and they offer just as much seating. I THINK what deco means, and I love this idea, is to have your couch face the fireplace and tv and scooted up to it, floating. Put a chair on either side of it, thus making the U. There would be a rug to center it all and maybe an ottoman in the middle, in front of the couch.

Nope.....I just read deco's again and she has more furniture than I was talking about.....sorry.

Also, when we first saw this house the first thing I invisioned in this FR is the Christmas tree to the right of the FP and stockings on the FP. So the TV will need to stay over the FP. :)

I love it......of course the holidays come in to your dreams when you buy and move! This will be a special family time for all of you this year.

That second pic is what deco had in mind with the couch and the chairs switched so the chairs could swivel to the windows.

So the swivel chairs would face the FP? Sorry I'm being dense

A sectional is such a huge piece of heavy furniture and it will limit your options of arranging the room....my personal opinion. I feel like a couch and two chairs will provide the same amount of seating, but more options.

You're right. My husband is set on a couch that I am unsure about.

I am liking this white piece from Macy's (again, would be in espresso brown not white). it's simple, yet classic.

I like both pics (the first ones) showing the fireplace that Dasha81 posted. The TV has to stay in the middle above the fireplace. Reason being is if you put the TV on one side of the room, people on the other far end will have trouble watching it. See the first pics that Dashi posted where the TV is set above the fireplace in both pics.

Since the fireplace is the focal point of the room, so is the TV. This is the only way to keep the balance in the room.

On the right side of the fireplace, I would suggest a low cabinet maybe concealing a desk, or just a floor lamp or a tall plant.

L-shaped sofa and 2 chairs creating a U is a great idea and seats enough for the family and guests.

Does this help? Two sofas and two chairs will be super flexible for changing the arrangement seasonally or whenever you want a new look. This is the configuration I first described, but the sofas can face each other perp to the FP with the chairs in front of it as well.

I like the idea of a couch or couches, and two chairs. Anything sectional is not versatile.

I like the lighter furniture you posted....second pic....as I really prefer that smoother look to the back instead of all those cushions/billows in that first one.

I actually like the look of the couch in the cream color. Too light to have w small kids?? I have 2 dirty boys. :)

I love cream furniture and it would be awesome with the wood in that room. They do make leather cleaners, too, and they do work! I actually found my husband made a bigger mess, even with ink from the newspaper.

And guess what.....those boys grow up, so think about how long you will have this new furniture in your new home. Plan on things for the long term that you LOVE. Now if you wanted a cloth cream couch, we would need to talk!
