Transom above front door?

Good morning Houzz!

We are selecting our doors this week.

Our build package includes a transom window above our front entry door.

We are in a conundrum about whether to include the transom above the door as no windows have transoms above them and are unsure of how it would look.

First picture is of our house and second picture is of a door layout we plan on going with with the exception of an additional center, horizontal grill in door glass. Third picture is a sample door with white trim without transom.

Certainteed Pacific blue siding and dark brown door are planned. We originally wanted door color trim between sidelights and door but wonder if the white trim would make everything stand out more with or without transom. We plan to paint interior of door and sidelights white to match interior house trim and keep interior bright.

Thank you for any advice.

I don’t see a transom fitting in that space so I would do the door no transom

Your question is best answered by looking at front elevation views drawn with and without the transom so you can make a more informed choice. If you forgo the transom will you get a 8 ft tall entry door?

IMO, the top of the door needs to line up w/ the top of the windows as the current framing does. So, whatever it takes to accomplish that--transom or taller door? Assuming the ceiling height is >8', yes?

I would think the transom would allow some additional light into the foyer. Based on the rough opening height I would do a door with a transom. Otherwise the door seems to be a bit too tall.

This is a similar house the builder has built. Dark brown, standard height, side lights and no transom.

What is the current height on the door opening? I prefer an 8ft door with sidelites if you plan on more glass further down the door. But, with that style of door, I'd probably go with the 6'8" door with the transom above & sidelites.

I would do exactly as he has done here. No transom and the door header at this homes current height (even though it is lower than the windows)

If you do have a transom in your house's situation, have a very attractive porch ceiling because that is all you're going to see out of it.

Under a porch, with a dark door, you can’t even really see the difference from the street. It’s a black hole regardless of option, and adds no extra light anywhere. I wouldn’t go the extra expense and difficulty. And I would pick a light colored paint for the door, not wood. A cheery yellow would look good with the blue color.

    agree with others, no transom.

Agree with others, no transom. A 96"x42" would be sweet.

This is a door that doesn't relate in any way to the rest of the house.

Thank you all the input. It is sincerely appreciated. I will advise on what my wife and I decide on.

    Hello everyone.

We decided to go without the transom. However, the builder ordered the door with a transom without any grills. As they were taking it off, they showed us it in both configurations roughed in as we were there that day visiting.

    We went with the transom.

    Excellent choice Daniel!

    Good morning Houzz....

We are less than two months away from move in and crunch time has begun with the flury of decisions yet to be made.

We love how the exterior is coming together with the Certainteed Pacific Blue Siding ProVia Shawnee dry stack choices. Vinyl craftsman columns have yet to be installed on top of the stone porch pillars.

We are about to pick paint colors and will be painting our front door.

Our original thought was to pick out a medium-dark brown to match the stone on the front of the house.

Any suggestions or feedback with front door color?

    Or Yellow!

I'm a fan of a bright yellow door. We are in the planning stages of building a new home and are planning Hardie Evening Blue siding, white trim, and a bright yellow door. Not for everyone, but suits us perfectly!

@Daniel, I like the non-transom color, exactly as we suggested and you specified.

I like the white because I’m drawn to it. Your porch is dark otherwise.
