A few tips to get you started

-hang drapes high

-Use contrast and texture in rooms with neutral palletes

-rectangular lamps are harder to work with. Never angle them in a corner.

Here is an example of a rug that is similar to yours, but provides contrast. I'd bring in some golden (subtle) tones to pull in your flooring.

great suggestions, but if you like to stay in the same color pallette select different finishes, like a satin or silk finish to the drapes, offering some sheen and a flifflier rug. Eyelash pillows with a subtle coloring complimenting the grey tones.

Gold with gray work well. I would go with higher curtain rod and fuller drapes.

IMO your neutral walls and couch are great. Maybe just find curtains and a rug that are neutral but have texture. You can bring in a little color with art and throw pillows-which are easier to change out if you need a new look. Good luck!

The rug used in the renderings above. I find rugs from many different sites. It depends on the client's style and budget. As a rule, I don't repeat many design elements from one design to another, but clients love the Clair rug, so you can see I did use the same rug in both of these designs.

Definitely the white rug with the diamond pattern. Choose plain white drapes that are slightly off white and have some texture. You need a wider rod or to pull the rod wider. I also suggest taller drapes.

If you found a way to like your initial rug [especially seeing there's a warm-wood color next to it] maybe it'd work. Possibly if you don't need the fan, a very cool light ?

Move the existing rug up forward to snug up to tv. Raise your curtain rods to the height of the ceiling...and buy longer curtains or sew some patterned fabric at the bottom. Add some blueish hued pillows to bring out the rug details and to balance the room better. Hi. The Clair rug is a good choice. Keep in mind, that any rug you choose will dictate other choices in the room. So, please make your choices together or at least understand that the pattern in the rug will dictate future choices.

The patterns on the drapes and rug are so muted that they look almost solid. I would look for drapes in the proper length in a lightly-patterned fabric which includes the colors of the walls, rug and sofa. Separate the long footstool from the sectional so it doesn’t look so monolithic: it allows easier access for sitting on the sofa and reduces the gray volume. Add some art and a few colorful accessories.

Rug got here finally! How does the fit seem? This is a 9 by 11 I also have a 8 by 10 if I need smaller.

I like the darker drapes you chose, than the first ones you picked. The last rug appears to take over the room and seems so large. Would you consider a darker rug that has some light colors in it?

it looks like the 9x11 may be a bit large. I am specifically looking at how it seems to be touching the sliders. it doesnt seem like there is enough hardwood showing in that area. I would try the 8x10 and see how that looks.

In this scenario, the rug becomes the star of the room. Each choice you make affects future choices. That will have to be considered going forward.

Why is the dining table not moved into the other room.....more under the fan? Please show a photo of the area with the exercise bike. Why is that there?

I would either shorten the curtains or raise the rod mounts so the curtains can hang just above the floor and rug, not drag or puddle. A freestanding cabinet in the corner would give you somewhere to store the clutter and add some height to balance the lamp in the other corner.

My husband moved the exercise bike into that space during this “stay home order” so he can watch tv and exercise. (He usually bikes to work) The far room is another living room with fireplace etc... I once tried to move the living room over there but it did not work, the couch was way too big and my husband complained about it. ( he likes the tv in this area where he can watch while he’s working at the table lol) This house has an awful layout so I’m just trying to make this “tv” room look decent at the moment. I left the rug back from the tv a bit because people are always waking through that area and didn’t want the rug ruined too quickly 😂
Felix I will raise the rod a little (I purchased a new rod but haven’t put it up yet) I will eventually move that basket in the corner and put the crap somewhere. (We lack storage too) Also plan to lose all the decorations and get a new lamp.
Do you guys think it’s weird to use the same rug only smaller in that room in the distance?

One more thing! I tried the smaller rug and it only fit about 2/3 of the couch 😬

HI. I know you are trying to accomodate others. But, you have to consider that the area is never going to look good with all of these adjustments.

Here is what I suggest:

-move the rug toward the tv. Change shoe policy in home to a "no shoe" policy

-bike can stay during "stay at home"

-Move table to under fan in second living room. That fan could be changed to chandelier.

-DH can turn tv angled when he wants to. Eventually tv should be hun.

-second living room needs most of furniture removed

-drapes should be a solid color and hung as high as possible. Matching drapes on the opposite window and any other visible windows in the area. I recommend a medium gray, about the tone of the sofa.

decoenthusiaste has the best idea with draperies and matching roman shades. I have blacout roman shades i white linen fabrisc in all of my bedrooms. You can even get bottom up/top down room darkening shades or blinds if you want some natural light but also some privacy

If you want to finish this room only:

1) Move rug towards tv

2) Hang tv

3) Hang neutral drapes high (need to take into consideration the wall across, though). Drape rod need to be wider and add a second panel to each side.

4) Pillows.

5) Replace lamp with arc lamp

6) C tables on either side of sofa

7) Remove the rest of the stuff.

The rug is okay but the curtain not so much. Check out some great curtains here.
