IMO it would not usually work for kids the cubbies are too small to be convenient so the stuff would end up on the floor I find with kids it has to make sense to them to get cooperation. Pictures and reality are not always the same. Ikea makes some types of cubby cabinets that might work better .We found with our boys that lockers seemed to be the answer and each one had a different favorite color for the locker never perfect looking but close.

It does look like a piece from a hotel where messages, mail, keys, etc. would be kept. I agree with Patricia Colwell that it might not work so well for kids cubbies. Kids usually have backpacks and the piece show wouldn't accommodate those. We often design storage cubbies for our homes that incorporate lockers, coat hooks and benches that provide for storage but also a place to remove shoes and boots and shed coats.

We use our mudroom for so much more than shoes and jackets. I currently need various junk drawers for all of the little things we grab for weekly as we are headed out plus the shenanigans that makes its way in. I was thinking baskets for the top row for organized chaos that is slightly hidden but easily accessible for those who know where to look.

ST5330 - it’s not just the design but the character of the antique piece, or replicated antique. But, maybe for the right price, we can get a standard cubby and add the top counter piece and paint/stain/distress it to our liking. 🙃

I’ve seen something very similar on Pinterest with shoe sized cubbies. I believe being advertised by someone who custom makes them.

You will spend a pretty penny on an antique in decent shape. You actually want to hang it. The real thing isn't deep enough for shoes, it's good for small items you want at eye level . Which is why something beneath it makes sense , perhaps.

The one in your inspo pic actually sat ON a larger sorting table, in a post office, or maybe an old hotel even, at one time. You can see that by looking at the base of the piece. By definition, most of them are going to be four or five feet wide, at least.

Jan - I seem to have that expensive antique taste lol I just bought a Lineberry cart for a coffee table. She was a pretty penny. But it was one of those things I had to have. I see what you’re saying about the shelf sitting on top of another piece; it makes sense why the bottom of the one pictured is open to the floor. I also see what you’re saying about the small boxes not being big enough for shoes... mine would probably fit but not my husbands. I have an old church pew across from the wall where I want this piece... maybe I will just put baskets underneath that to hold shoes. I like the idea of this sorting cubby being on the ground and the height shown in the picture BC I was wanting to put hooks for keys and maybe some art above it.

My point was you will ruin the look with shoes hanging out. None will be more than 5" deep. This one 12" deep. ( one shoe to a cubby, I'd say , but at least a shoe will FIT. Pretty perfect height.

Here is a cool post office cubby that was in the old post office in Woodstock, Il. I bought it from a local friend in 2005 and used it in my store for years. It's in good solid shape but has some small holes and markings here and there which is common to the age of the piece.
It is made of old growth pine and dovetailed. The cubbies are in great shape with no breaks. There are 63 cubbies which measure 5 x 2 3/4 average inches. The back was painted turquoise at one time.
This is a very heavy piece.
