tiled range hoods ?

Doing a kitchen remodel within a large 39 by 39 great room at a waterside home.
The 48 inch midnight blue Aga Elise range is going in under a peaked roof about 20 feet high. There is a round window in the middle of the peak about 13 feet from the floor. I was thinking of doing a chateau style stainless steel hood with complementary metal bands and rivets and a subtle white or glass backsplash with a sheen of sorts. Yesterday while looking at tile, I saw a gorgeous ombré tile in blues. I think this would look amazing but would lose a lot of the ombré effect behind a large hood. And obviously there would be too much going on( even for me, the queen of “less is not more “). We started discussing making the hood out of wood wrapping it in the ombré tile to line up with the pattern of the tile across that whole area above the range. Anyone done or seen tiled range hoods ? There will be a backsplash area of about 30 inches to the left of the range and about 5 feet of backsplash to the right. One possibility is that the ombré would run horizontally on those areas of the backsplash. I’m still throwing around possibilities, ideas and thoughts on this possible change of plan ( in the attached photos, there is another window going in on the rectangle on the right. It is on back order).

Just Google "tiled range hoods", lots of images. If you want this treatment the range wall will require a structural engineer.

    Thanks chflipper.

I'm not getting a lot of actual tiled hoods, both here here and in google. What comes up, mostly is tile behind regular range hoods. Looking for opinions both from people who might have done it and also on the ombre tile and how best to do this specific design.

What’s the cleaning plan for a 20’ wall behind a range? Are you OK with the hood taking away from the range as the focal point? Because even an Aga is going to pale under 20’ of ombré tile.

And good advice on consulting a the structural engineer. That aspect has all been handled but always good to cover all bases.

Thanks The Cook's Kitchen. It's the same cleaning plan I've had for the last 14 years with this ceiling height .

I googled range hood wrapped in tile and range hood made of tile and got some hits that might be worth looking at. Some linked to discussions about how the work was done, like this one https://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=5814 .

That tile is fantastic. Hate to see it hidden by a range hood IMO. If the hood is sleek and streamlined, it may be fine as it won't cover so much. Trying ti picture warpping the hood with it but i can't.

Right Jeanne, it would not only be wasted but lose the effect of the shading. I also thought of a very flat low hood like this https://www.us-appliance.com/da2mieldeswa.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA04XxBRD5ARIsAGFygj_7ta3mLKzZSA5q03ecKL8eF39FsKE0Tuzealjwt1eCvLY0FN9o7scaAq0vEALw_wcB but you still have the stack/chimney. i think wrapping it would give me the full effect of . the tile and still having a useful hood. It is hard to visualize that's why i was looking for good pictures of it.

KR thank you for the response. do you have any pics on your website? Did you mean brick stone patterN? Thanks for the opinions too. I also think it would be a statement installation.

Zalco, I saw that forum too. Some great advice and a good example of the tiled hood. I had to laugh at the question about the lonely spigot in the wall. I guess pot fillers weren't that prevalent in 2002. I know they were available because i had looked at them when doing my main residential kitchen in 2001/2002.

I always like those of us who think outside the box. I think you have to take in account everything else that will be going on in this room and how does this fit in. Does it become the star and overtake everything else or will it blend with what your plans are for the rest of the room. And what do you want it to do in that respect? When the Houzz sketch tool is back up and running in the Ideabooks you may want to use it to sketch the tile onto your wall. It will give you a bit of a visual as to how it will look.

If you haven't yet the other thing you might search is ombre tile backsplash just to give you a better sense of the impact that a wall would have.

Tedbixby thanks so much for your thoughtful advice and for taking the time to find those pics. I’ve never known about the Houzz sketchtool ?

I think the tile will look fantastic, I just wonder if the hood will.

Supposedly the sketchtool is also on the App but I have a PC so I'm only familiar with that one and only know that it is gone for now on the PC. On the PC it has been acting up but I noticed yesterday that Houzz had removed it so Im guessing they are upgrading and fixing it. If you are on a PC (and if and when they put it back on) and open an Ideabook you'll see above the 1st photo there are words that say File Photo. To the right of the Photo there usually is a sketch button. Once in there, you can build a room using photos from your Ideabooks (you have the ability to crop the photo in the sketch), your own photos, Houzz photos, etc and put the item anywhere you wish. Hopefully, it will be up and running soon so that you can play around with it for a better visual.

I don't know if you saw this which you might glean something off of it

wow. all these years and I never knew that. thank you. And great reference for the building a tiled hood. I had seen it but now I have saved it.

Thanks to all those who helped and commented. It’s much appreciated. I think the shading can be custom designed and I decided to go with a linear low profile hood (Miele) and design the tile around that. With the size and volume of my room I can go with something dramatic and I know that I can make it all complementary.

Great that you have come to a decision and can move forward. Please post photos when it is done as we would love to see it.
