Help with Small Bedroom in 650 sq ft NYC apartment
Comments (4)A one bedroom in NYC? Wow. Impressive. Can you do a thumbnail sketch of the room? Overall dimensions (you said 12x15, but which way?) Go all the way around the room with all dimensions: Start in a corner: corner>window frame>window including frame>frame to corner>wall to corner>corner to door jamb>door including jamb>where is closet? You get the idea. Do you have a queen or king size bed? What is the size of the dresser? width x depth x height How high is the ceiling? In a small master bedroom, it's all in the details. Off the top of my head, the bed should not be under the window and feet facing door (bad feng shui from what I understand). Also, is that the bathroom across the hall from the bedroom door? I would love to help. This could be a gem....See MoreNYC Living room - empty walls, more furniture?
Comments (13)Hi Christy, You have a great size apt for NYC;) (I was born and raised in nyc until 2 years ago) Few things are you renting and if so are you allowed to paint and drill holes into the walls? If so I agree with bschr you should def hang the bike and incorporate it as art. I would suggest addressing the long wall first by buying a longer entertainment center with doors to conceal your books, dvds, etc. I would also suggest taking all the pictures you have on the window sills and enlarging them to 5x7 and 8x 10 putting them in same color frames to make it organized. I hope the images help and I could go on and on about the rest of the room but don't want to overwhelm you with all my text! :) PS: If you are allowed to paint you should def paint that entire wall a warmer color and then you can address window treatment etc....See MoreMore homey...less officey... Advice?
Comments (36)The first thing i think of is to add curtains, preferably ones with a luxurious sheen. A little sheen can knock out a stodgy office vibe quite quickly. Some art work, specifically photography, would add a more livable aesthetic to the room. Family pictures are a quick way to create that 'home' feel without a significant investment; however, if you want to avoid the '80s dining room vibe you may get with full color images, go black & white on canvas. Good luck, it's a great space....See MoreNew Small NYC apartment! Need help Decorating!
Comments (10)So you want to make a sitting area out of the top bedroom or the bottom one? And is that where your TV will be, or will there also be a living room space in the larger open zone? (I'm a little confused by not being able to map the kitchen onto the floor plan, which makes it unclear what space there is for dining table or other things...) As for the nursery, I'd start by reducing it to one door. to give you some kind of walls to work with. I think you'll need one corner for the crib and the opposite one for a changing table, and if you can fit a narrow rocker, that's a big help too, but I'm not sure you can (depending on which door you keep). Maybe if you get the crib and changing table on the same wall, you can put a chair opposite one of them, or if they're on adjacent walls, then a chair in the remaining corner... Six feet is really narrow, so you basically can only use one wall in there, although you could have shelves on the other. This room is probably 8 feet across: One interesting possibility is to put the crib facing out from the wall, allowing use of spaces to either side. Or that could make you crazy. :) I think you're going to need to work with graph paper to make this room work -- cut out the sizes of your crib and table (and/or chair) and see how they fit. Ideally you have 30" to walk around, although you could probably live with 24" in a pinch. A few random thoughts: take a visit to Ikea -- in particular, they now show some model apartments with small footprints that can help you think about efficient use of space. They also offer a lot of decent storage options for living spaces (esp. TV consoles and book cases) and bedrooms, which can get you started all at once without a huge hemorrage of money. They also offer lots of colorful modern rugs that won't break the bank. If nothing else, it gives you a baseline way to think about all the parts you need, and then you can decide which pieces to get elsewhere or which to replace later when you've recovered from the move (and parenthood)... Not sure whatyou wwant in lighting ideas -- you at least seem to have plenty of overhead lighting, which sometimes isn't the case, so there may be no rush. Reading lamps by beds and couches are nice. As for nursery decor, you might want to find a paint color and then use something temporary like a wall decal (could be large trees or polka dots, etc) that won't limit you later like a wallpaper and will be less overwhelming in a small space....See Morekatinparadise
