Cosmos , all plant, few blooms

I had beautiful cosmos plants from seed last year that grew to over 6' tall. They didn't bloom until about October and even then it was a poor production. I did feed them early in the year which I later read is not a good idea. Once I read they like lean conditions I mostly quit watering them and didn't feed them. Maybe my soil is too rich for them. Are there any that bloom earlier than others? I've grown them in the past with some years good, some bad. Can't remember what variety I bought...it was probably some giant kind with mixed pink and white.

My self seeded pink and white Cosmos bloomed well starting in July in a sandy part of my garden, so my expectation is that the fertilizer and/or too rich soil was the culprit. IME some plants produce foliage at the expense of flowers in fertile soil.

The yellow/orange varieties (Cosmos sulphureus) seem to bloom much earlier and have tons of blooms.

I bought some seeds of the yellow and orange ones, Bright Lights, and a dwarf one , Cutesy, which is supposed to be earlier blooming, and Summer Dreams which is also supposed to be earlier. I will try planting them in the toughest spots in my garden. I have a gravelly dry area in front of my picket fence. I like cosmos so much.

I grew mine from seed and never fed them, but they bloomed all summer. I think they prefer a lean soil.
