Replacing an Ash tree in Menlo Park, CA...ideas please

We had to remove our beloved (hated by neighbors for weeds) Ash tree. After a limb fell off the tree in October narrowly missing our neighbor's roof, we learned the tree was dying and a hazard to our home and neighbors' homes.

Characteristics we are looking for in a new tree:

- minimal litter. (We get enough litter from the redwood on the other side of the fence, and an oak in the front yard.)

- evergreen

- interesting trunk (multi-stem)

- moderate to fast growing

- ok to plant underneath

Before/after photos below... We plan to continue the pittosporum hedge along the fence.

I love the maytenus boaria tree, but read that it could have shallow roots, therefore competing with plantings in the understory. Our arborist recommended the podocarpus fern pine or the pistacia chinensis. Looking for other ideas. Virtually every room in our home looks out onto the yard. This tree will be visible from every part of our home. No pressure, right? :)
