Faith, you need to read the manual and description for each cycle. But also bear in mind you can change default temperature options with the exception of Sanitary and Allergen. You're making bad assumption you've selected steam if you're seeing steam on the window. That could be just the residual heat of hot water being selected and the heater helping maintain that cycle--those cycles are ones on the "steam" side of the control dial--specifically cycles that allow steanm as an option. (again get to now your cycles per the manual). Less water and higher detergent concentration due to that also help clean everything. Your sox may have to be done on Allergen or Sanitary to yield the results you're expecting.

Boba1, you are correct. I do think I was just seeing steam from the hot water setting I used. I still do not think I used the steam setting. I will be reading the manual, today. I just did not have the time after all the errands we had to run yesterday, but I needed to get some clothing started.

Last night I said the opposite (sorry I was tired) about the cologne issue with the previous machines and just wanted to correct that. The Kenmore was the one that was terrible at removing odors. The Samsung did a good job removing odors. The only thing it didn't completely remove was the cologne, but it still did well with that. As far as the LG, I did not smell the cologne when I removed the clothing from the wash, but I did smell some cologne on one item after removing it from the dryer.

Faith M ... keep in mind that after you get a handle on how the various cycles & options operate, you should choose a cycle for your various loads according to how you want them treated, not based on what are the labels on the cycles per this or that type of fabric/load.

Dadoes, do you recommend warm and hot water even if the tag says cold?

Today, so far, I've done a bedding cycle on warm (that had a few days old blood stain). I didn't try to find the stain when I got it out of the washer because the quilt is just so large... I just tossed it in the dryer and will look when I get it back on the bed. I am now doing another load of clothes on Heavy Duty Turbo Wash. Loving those jets.

@Faith M If you want the jets to go push the Turbo Wash button in the upper corner. It's on automatically on some cycles but you can add it to most of them. It shows if its on by the button being lit/highlighted. I use it most of the time.

Also adding that you can usually pause the cycle and add options like Turbo and extra rinses even after it's started. It may change the overall cycle time.

Thanks, Anne!! Do you happen to know what the little shirt logo means? It's a shirt with arrows. At the end of the bedding cycle the display said END and that logo was lit up. The door would not open until I hit the power button. I'm currently reading the care manual (online), but it skips over that logo!

Also, does the dryer light not come on every time the door is opened?

So far the dryer light does not come on when I open it’s door. Dyer is great so far too!

The logo with the arrows around the shirt is the Fresh Care option. It’s in the same button as Steam and activated when you hold the Steam button down for 3 seconds. It’s supposed to tumble the load of laundry if you’re not home to take it out of the machine right away. Doing my son’s bed pads and sheets in a Sanitary load now and I chose Fresh Care since we have to leave later to go to his dr. appointment this afternoon.

The Heavy Duty and Bright Whites load came out good. It removed stains, for sure. I don't know that the towels are brighter white, though. Littlegreeny mentioned I might need to run those through, I think, on high heat without detergent to see a difference (since they probably have detergent residue from the old machine). So, I will try that and then get back to you on those. I can tell you that it's removed several "difficult" stains with no pretreating. Since we were without a washer for four days, our clothing had to sit dirty in the laundry room until the new machine arrived. We have five kids, so you can imagine how messy clothing can get. It's removed several day old grape juice, chocolate, etc. I was worried that an adorable Snoopy shirt was ruined, but nope... looks good as new! I'm completely sold on this machine. :)

Faith M ... a given temperature selection likely isn't the same on every cycle. The designated Normal cycle, being the most energy-restricted, will have lower warm and hot temperatures than other cycles. Delicate may have a warmer warm than Normal.

As mentioned earlier, towels and sheets should ALWAYS be washed in hot despite what the tag says. There is a potential that the color may bleed, but that is why I only buy white sheets and towels. Mamapiny is likely turning over in her grave at the thought of someone suggesting a warm wash for either.

I picked up the ALL Free&Clear from Costco, today. I plan on using that on our white socks, tomorrow. Which cycle do you think I should use? Heavy Duty/Power wash? Brightest Whites? Steam?

So glad you're enjoying your new set. Use the brightest whites cycle with steam. Don't use turbo wash because you want the cycle to be longer.

Don't be disappointed if it can't get those socks clean. You might need to start with fresh new socks.

Sounds like a good plan. I think you may be right about needing to start over with new socks. They are just in bad shape at this point in the game.

I would follow littlegreeny's suggestion--if you're dealing with loads that need intense cleaning and high temperatures, use highest water temp cycle will allow, heaviest soil, steam, and turn Tubrowash off

I just wanted to thank everyone for the advice I received in this thread! I am so happy with our new washer and dryer. I'm still learning all the setttings/features, but both are working really well. The dryer is fast and I don't have to restart it, even for jeans and towels, which I had to do frequently in both of our previous dryers. I originally thought this dryer was slower than the Samsung, but once I switched settings around a bit, I would say it's about the same, and I haven't had to run a second cycle since then. So happy! And that says a lot since I was so nervous about getting a front loader. When the Kenmore went out, I was convinced I needed another top loader... I'm one of those people that insists on tons of water and I wasn't convinced a FL could do the job... but I've been proven wrong!

So awesome Faith M! Yes, there is a little bit of a learning curve, with the washer in particular, but once you figure out the different options, cycles and how it works with each cycle/option, it really makes it worth it! So glad you like your new set as much as we do! :)

I just gathered all the disgusting socks (it's sad because most were "washed" in the Samsung and in our drawers, but they still look disgusting) and I put them in two containers filled with very hot water and Oxi Clean. I am going to let them soak for the 1-6 hours (as recommended for heavy stains) and then I'm going to wash them with the new Costco detergent on the highest heat/steam setting. I feel like this is the best shot I have in getting them clean. I'm trying because some of them are Adidas (I don't think I photographed those)... they are very thick and we really like them... so I figured I'd try to save them, if possible. The water is already turning brown. It's so disturbing.

Get a box of Tide with Bleach powder detergent for the future socks. Use it on the hot cycle you end up liking on your new washing machine for blasting crud off fabrics. It's a good detergent to use on whites (socks, t-shirts, towels, sheets, white dress shirts, kitchen and cleaning towels, etc...) to keep them white. I've brought many things back from the ugly with this detergent. A good long soak draws out all manner of dirt and dingy in my experience.

I fear some of your yucky socks might not come completely clean (and why I mentioned future socks : ). We have some socks like that--all the same brand that even with all my tricks and magic I learned on this forum, these socks are not clean looking on the bottom from when I had my crummy washing machine. It seems that certain fabric fibers don't give up the soiling as one expects. Other socks we have that got ugly with our former washing machine have come nice and clean with Tide with Bleach powder and our improved washer.

PS I use and love the ALL liquid from Costco. Good stuff, but I do use Tide with Bleach powder on most of my whites loads except for sheets--use ALL from Costco for those due to being unscented.

When my grandson came to live with us full time his socks were bad bad. I soaked them in sodium percarbonate, biz, and tide with bleach powder with hot hot water for 6 hours. I then sprayed them with puracy stain spray and wash them on sanitize with tide with bleach powder and 90% of the stains went away. I only use tide with bleach powder (or German universal persil powder) for whites. Mine sparkle since using that exclusively for whites.

SEA SEA and Larisa, is there a free & clear version of the Tide with bleach powder? Two of our kids break out in head to toe hives from Tide, so we have to use free & clear detergent. Larisa, that's a lot of steps (you really meant business!)... was this only for the socks that were bad from poor performing washing machines, or do you do this all the time? I just want to clarify... it sounds like you do not have to do this all the time. Sea Sea, were your socks Adidas?? I love these socks!

It was only the socks he came with that were dirty. Tide with bleach powder they don’t make in a free and clear version. Maybe try German universal powder or Miele ultra white powder. Both on amazon and work great for whites as well.

To make a free and clear type of 'bleaching' powder detergent you can do it this way;

ALL Free and Clear powder detergent + ALL Free and Clear OXI Booster, or Dropps OXI pods

All three are available on Amazon at a reasonable price. They might be at Walmart (the ALL) or such, but I have to mail order most anything worth while--small town here, so not sure on Walmart stock.

I sometimes use the above when I need to oxi my white sheets every so often, as I don't use Tide with Bleach powder on sheets due to the scent.

The regular Tide Free and Gentle powder is nearly identical to the Tide plus Bleach powder. It works very well, but I LOVE P&G powder scents, so I buy them. With all the extra rinses you seem to be using, I doubt irritation would be an issue.

I always have people asking me how I keep my clothes white. One sweatshirt in particular is all white, and people always ask if it is new or "when did you get that?". My white socks are no longer screaming white, but are still decent looking. A majority of them are 10 years old, and I guarantee you that they look better than a majority of peoples socks after 1 year.

Tide with bleach powder has a bleach activator that’s tide free and gentle does not have. While free and gentle work good for my water type it just don’t work the same. Everyone’s results will vary though, I do have hard water.

Yea, I used one box of Tide Free and Gentle and it left funk/stink/BO behind and didn't power through stains to my expectations. I prob won't buy it again. I ended up using it for rags, but then my rags smelled bad.

The ALL Free and Clear powder does work well for us though. Our water conditions and washer prob have a lot to do with all of this.

Both Tide Free and Gentle and ALL Free powders are wonderful. I prefer Tide over the ALL as it just seems to clean and deodorize better, at least in my water. You really can't go wrong with either one.

Doreycrouse, I actually don't do extra rinses. I know someone else on this thread does, though. I prefer not to due to the amount of time it takes. I might eventually try Tide Free & Clear. In the past, I've avoided that brand just because of what the regular one did to our kids' skin. I would think the free & clear would not do that.

I am really hoping the ALL Free & Clear liquid I got from Costco and the two I normally use (All Free & Clear from Target/Walmart and Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin Plus Fresh Scent - both liquid) will be enough with the new washing machine. We'll see.

LG strongly recommends using no more than 2 tablespoons of detergent or one pod per load. Using more will result in a suds error and build up of detergent residue in your laundry. Overuse of detergent will eventually lead to mildew and a smelly biofilm to accumulate on all the inner workings of the washer.

Just wanted to update... most of the socks came out much cleaner. There are a few that did not let go of the dingy grey. I'll just get rid of those at some point. The rest are noticeably whiter and brighter.

I'm still concerned about the knocking noise. It did it some on the towel/sock load. It's when it starts and ends the spin cycle. Is that normal?

I'd keep the socks. They'll probably improve after running through a few more cycles. Some years ago my dad pulled some nice towels out of the neighbor's trash at their shared corner. They apparently were redecorating. The towels weren't worn, had fold-creases from cabinet storage or maybe hanging on a rod, with a bit of discoloration. He kept some, gave some to me. The discoloration disappeared after several washes in hot water and oxy- or chlorine bleach.

Great news Faith! Maybe you shouldn't give up just yet. Those socks will probably come back to life after a few more washings in the LG.

And I replied in your other thread about the balancing. It sounds normal and I wouldn't be too concerned.

Okay, I will give the socks awhile longer. The rest of them (including the Adidas socks) are looking really good! :)

This machine got hair dye out of a white towel, with no pre-treating! A little backstory: my husband bought me a new fluffy white towel a couple of months ago as part of a gift (he knows how much I like those). Then, our teenaged daughter decided to dye her hair a bright reddish-purpleish color (she has dark brown hair, so it didn't show up too much). Anyway, the dye itself was bright pink. She washed her hair and used my brand new fluffy white towel to dry her hair. She apparently didn't wash all the hair dye out of her hair, so lots of it wound up on said towel. I thought this towel was ruined because I didn't find out about it right away and it sat... teenagers!! I decided to throw it in the load I was doing, last minute, so I did not pretreat it. It came completely out!! I now wish I had taken a before photo.

I've always done extra rinses to keep whites bright. If detergent is not rinsed out completely whites can turn dingy. My brothers always had the whitest football pants because mom presoaked them in Cascade before laundering. I've never used it on socks but that might be worth a try. You could also try boiling them with lemon.

arrive. Funny thing is the $125 set is doing just fine except for the sound it is LOUD.

We got the set and as of now both machines are total champs!! This set has truly been excellent!! :)

Hi! I absolutely love ours. Our clothes are clean and our white socks are back to being clean!! Very happy with my purchase. Does your spin cycle ever get a bit loud and bang the door? That is the only negative I can come up with... and it may just need more adjusting. It does not happen all the time.

Faith M....glad you’re loving your set as well! Ours does not get too loud in the spin cycle...it’s actually much more quiet than our previous Frigidaire Affinity washer on spin cycle. Just a few very trivial caveats for me, I don’t like the tinted doors or lack of light in the washer. And I’d like a soak option.

But those are not a big deal at all. This set really is terrific in many ways! Our whites are super bright too now that we have this set!

I am also happy with mine. My clothes get dry in the dryer, the washer does its job. My complaints are the LED panel needs to be backlit and I agree on the tinted doors.
