Window Sensor for casement windows

We had ADT install a security system today. We had them put window sensors on each of our casement windows. I find it hard to believe that the sensor they used is their best solution. I have never seen anything so obtrusive. Aesthetics aside to install the sensor we had to decide between having screens or not having screens and were installed with double sided tape!!! After the installer left we gave them a test run... armed the alarm and they didn’t even work. Bottom line we need a different product. The windows must have sensors. We are getting an alarm system because we live in a ranch and want to insure our teenager stays in our house at night. Any suggestions?

Maybe mount them at the top of the window so they are not quite in your direct line of sight? alternatively use an externally mounted camera that has your windows in their field

of view and that is integrated into a central alarm system or simply sends a notice to your phone when it detects motions in its filed of view. These cameras do not use traditional motion detection technology, they continuously compare the image of camera to detect when the image has changed (like something has entered the image) and send an alert when it occurs. You can select the area of the camera image that is monitored so you don’t get alerts from squirrels and the like. Most off the shelf systems have 6 to 8 cameras which can be mounted on your eaves to cover the entire house exterior. They do require some work to run the wiring, but when you are finished, it’s a pretty cool feature to have. The camera view shown below is from our system covers most of one side of our house and would detect someone entering or leaving multiple windows. And I’m looking at it from out of the country at the moment. They have night vision and show this kind of clarity even in total darkness. And you would have video evidence which might be an additional deterrence. The biggest negative of these systems is the Choices are absolutely overwhelming.

We really like the Nest system. The sensors (that you install yourself) are smaller than an adult’s finger and can be use on windows and doors, or as general motion sensors on walls. We went with the system’s smoke alarms and a few cameras too.

I had integrated sensors in all of my wooden doors, wooden casement, aluminum sash windows in my last house. It was installed by a local company, there are better options out there. The magnet was drilled into the wood and the receiver/transmitter was flush with the window frame.

Th is is my ring setup now.

We currently have ring but it is dependent on WiFi and keeps loosing connectivity.

On the up side after doing a little research I did find two sensors that are made by ADT that are specifically for casement windows. With any luck we will get this straightened out tomorrow.

As for cameras... do you get notified when there is movement or do you have to review the recording?

We really need a system that will notify us immediately if a window or door has been opened or tampered with. I don’t like finding out after the fact my teenager left in the middle of the night.

I am notified, too often most of the time. Our WiFi went out, but if you pay for monitoring at $10/mo ring provides cellular backup so it will continue working just like ADT would. Ring doesn’t have any sensor options, just the one I posted.

We only have WiFi in the common areas of our home. So we need something hardwired or working off cellular.

hmm, yeah. They sell all sorts of range extenders but everyone’s situation is different. Hardwired is nice, especially if the house was built with it.

Found out ADT make a slimline sensor not sure why they didn’t offer it to us. The description actually says it works in casement windows. I think the tech must not have known what he was doing.

This certainly reflects poorly on ADT. How can they call an install finished when the system doesn’t even work? And, their systems are pricey. You should not have to be the one searching for a solution here. Bump the issue up to a manager at your local office. Your Sales rep didn’t know what he/she was doing.

I am contacting them unfortunately their office isn’t open till tomorrow.

It truly is ridiculous, the two side windows next to our door aren’t even protected!

Our windows sensors in the back house of the house aren’t even touching the window, screen or each other?! Seriously are they even connected? In theory if the glass was broken the alarm would sound but that’s not the product we need. But can that even be trusted given the circumstances? Besides we need something that will notify us if the windows are open not that the window has been broken.

My camera system will notify me immediately, but it does require internet. Our system can be hardwired or use WiFi to connect to our router.
