Decorating dining room table?

Hi- I just painted and put molding up in my dining room. I really like it but now I am struggling how to decorate the dining room table. The rest of the house is more transitional. Also would you change the light fixture? Any other suggestions?

I'd prefer bare wood, no table cloth, and one large item in the middle, maybe flowers or a large bowl.

^^Exactly what I was going to say.

Also, remove the doily on the small sideboard and polish that silver. It should gleam. If you never use that silver, and want it solely for display, and don't want to have to keep polishing it, you can get it coated so that it never needs polishing and will be shiny gleaming silver forever. But you won't be able to use the silver as serving pieces once it has that coating; it's strictly for display.

Thanks so much. That is a great idea I hadn’t thought of

It looks like a lovely room. Meant to say I love those two buffet lamps.

My first inclination would be to turn the table the other way and second I think hanging the art on the molding takes away from the molding.

    No tablecloth

Very pretty room! I love the art. I would lose the tablecloth and just have bare wood or a runner or tray with some larger objects on the table.

Lovely dining room, clearly a beautiful, classic house. I agree with the advice already given about the table cloth, centerpiece and silver.

Your room is very beautiful! I love the things that Chloe posted!

What a beautiful dining room! For everyday I too prefer no table linens but I could see a pretty tea or brunch where the lace would look so appropriate and sweet.

Penny, I also thought about jck910's suggestion of turning the table. Is that even possible? It's nice to have at least 36"-42" between the table edge and any walls or furniture...with 42" being best.

Remove the table cloth. Remove the doily. I agree, the art work does not look good on the molding. You say your house is otherwise Transitional but this room looks VERY traditional. Definitely get a more modern light fixture & hang it appropriately. Yours is too high. I'd also get a new lamp for that console, maybe something shorter & chunkier. That look of two slender lights is a bit dated. I do like those dough bowls with their contents changed seasonally. Yes, they can be rustic but the mixture of rustic & traditional/transitional looks good if done right. In lieu of a 2nd lamp on that console, I'd put a small colorful object. I do like the silver tea service but yes, do polish it. Your china hutch in the corner can use some updating. Can you put the china & glassware elsewhere & replace them with fewer but more interesting items that also show some color OR rearrange the china/glass them in a less organized manner & add a few items of color.

I want to echo what Samondragon said that I was surprised to see you mention your house is otherwise Transitional. Your dining room has only traditional elements to it. There is not a hint of anything other than traditional. I would not fight that, I'd embrace it, which you already have with the furnishings and rug. Don't change the chandelier, it fits with the room.

Because you cannot fit the painting that is over the silver properly inside the molding on that wall due to the light switch, I'd switch that painting for the smaller one that is to the left of the mirror, which will fit with the light switch on that wall. Put the larger painting in the wall space on the left of the mirror that was vacated by the smaller painting.

As others have said, remove the tablecloth and doily. Put just one showpiece item on the dining table - perhaps a dramatic large glass bowl to add lightness (needs to be empty, no tchotchkes in the bowl). Also, not only polish the silver, but remove the greenery on that tray that is with the silver. That greenery is not good. The silver pieces are beautiful.

IMO the corner cabinet is not successful in this room. The painting should be centered on the chandelier and table and centered in the molding on the wall

No table cloth. Replace with a floral arrangement in the center.

its Race-track shape table top so if you choose more decorative things for your table then it will look more rushy. Try to select few things that definitely give a splendid view. Its table sheet does not look good remove it or try a dark color sheet on your table.

Here I have given a link of mirror plates for table decor.

Beautiful room! I agree with removing the table cloth--I only use them when we have guests over for dinner to protect the table. I purchased a beautiful illuminated mercury glass vase that comes with tiny lights that you can put on a timer for my dining room table and I love it! There are beautiful designs and ideas on QVC that will not break the bank.

You room is lovely but your art isn’t hung properly. It is too high and I think the placement of your moldings are not planned well for your art. I love the chandelier Beverly posted and the arrangement. Hope you can make the adjustments to really take the room to the next level.
