on the other hand …..we keep recycling totes right outside kitchen/garage door and make a consistent effort to recycle so the garbage volume has decreased considerably over time. I purposely use a trash receptacle that is smaller and fills in a few days and the bag is nowhere near so heavy it needs a wheeled tote or a "garage" stall . Seems like a small or medium trash can would suffice with recycling efforts at the same time. ARE there not odours to deal with if a garbage sized trash receptacle is placed in your kitchen? Yes well every household is different.

I've been thinking about the same thing. I'd love to have the garbage can tucked away, but also to be able to roll it around my kitchen in order to have it where I might want to use it.

Bklyn, do you mean the actual garbage can that you then roll outside? Or a kitchen trash can, so you can easily roll it to wherever you are generating trash? If the latter, it’s a brilliant idea. My kitchen trash can is small enough I can easily move it, but if it were bigger it’d be nice to be able to roll it around with my feet.

i mean a standard kitchen can that takes a standard 13 gallon bag, so convenient to roll around from workspace to workspace.

You‘ll want to build a bit of a lip and frame to hold the can in place, so the can doesn’t slip off the base, and maybe some rubber edging so it doesn’t mar woodwork etc if it bumps.

I like the idea. Would the base be weighted to avoid tipping? Would it have a handle on one or more sides to give you a clean surface to touch when moving it? I guess I am having a little trouble picturing it.

The frame doesn’t have to be too high, just maybe a third the height of the can. And just a window sash handle attached, easy.

We made the sink cabinet a pull out drawer instead of a cupboard with doors. Our tall, plastic, rectangular trash can with easy flip up lid section (Home Depot, $40) sits in there. It’s perfect. We are also able to keep a folding stool, dishwasher soap and rinse agent, liquid dish soap, scrub pads, cleaning spray and a buffing cloth in the pull out....everything is sooo easy to access— all this in a pull out that is 27” wide.
