When you say “updating“ and “you’re open to any style”, do you mean you are going to renovate this kitchen? I.e, new cabinets, counters, appliances, sink, lighting, floors, and layout. Or, are you just wanting to switch out the faucet and a couple small cosmetic changes. Your post is so vague it’s impossible to answer it really. Tell us what you are looking for advice on. What is your ballpark budget?

For the most minimal update I’d do can lighting- you will have to add a few more, new chandelier over the table instead of the boring “boob light”, and new backsplash. The cabinets look like they are high quality, if you painted them hire a pro.

When you say "update" I am going to assume that means you think there are aspects that look "outdated".

Focusing specifically on that, I would:

- change all the light fixtures (recessed cans and attractive pendant as everyone else said)

- paint the walls (I'm always a fan of white, or possibly very light gray if that's too crisp for you). Could also do something like a very light yellow to match the warmth. Either way the dark gray and green are currently too heavy in my opinion

- cabinet hardware (minimal, small, modern)

- sink faucet (stainless, something without red on it)

- backsplash if you can

- perhaps switch out the dining room table and chairs unless you like them

Flooring is a bigger thing so I'm going to assume that's out of the question.

The cabinets and appliances, and even countertops, are already looking great so you have a huge head start. As someone who is a fan of natural wood, please don't paint the cabinets!!!! But seriously, do whatever you want, it's your house :)

I will definitely be painting - likely agreeable grey by Sherwin Williams. I will also replace the lights, faucet, and hardware.

What I'm sort of caught up on is the cabinets, because I'm torn if they should be painted? E.g., some white kitchens look beautiful but others look so... sterile and uninviting.

Is the wood too dated? should they be stained a different colour?

I think I'll also go to a cabinet maker and see if they can turn the upper doors that are arched into a rectangular shape like the lowers.

I never even considered the backsplash but that might be a great start to update the space (along with the other 'for sure' updates like paint, lights, etc.)

You can work with the color of the cabinets without painting them. The countertop choice was not the best...

yeah the countertop wouldn't have been number one choice but it's still in really good shape so I'm hoping to work with it

Do the cabinets still work with the black/grey speckled granite?

The floors will be another project for another time (the lino as seen in these photos, and there's earthy green carpet on the stairs and two rooms...)

I like the cabinets and agree with the idea of changing out the hardware. That with the paint you’ve selected is a good start. The backsplash would be the other dark area worth focusing on. Here are my oak cabinets for what it’s worth. Good luck! Looks like you have bones to start with.
