Master bathroom floor plan help please!

Here is our existing layout. Our master bathroom is the one with a door on the hallway for guests. I’m finally ready to fix this! Here is our proposed plan:

- make that hallway side a powder room

- expand bathroom into bedroom

- remove tub & replace with a shower

- replace single sink with double.

The problem is I’m not sure how to best layout the bathroom, especially with that window on exterior wall. Any advice please? I want this to feel like a master bathroom, even though it’s on the small side. (we are losing that small closet, but we’re going to make a shallow closet next to the existing one in bedroom) Thanks!

Show us the layout of the whole space including the hallways and how it relates to the rest of the floor. We can't design in a vacuum. It needs to be seen in entirety.

Great plan! We built something similar but we have both a shower and tub in it. The double doors on the top right of the master bath lead to the master bedroom. The powder room is TINY but it serves the purpose. Here’s our plan a KD/BD created for us.

My suggestion would be to move your revised bathroom door to an area furthest away from your bed/pillows! This way you can add a windowif the bathroom is on an exterior wall.

@Lidia thanks for sharing. Your bathroom is much bigger than what I have available, unfortunately. But I do like your layout. My contractor is drawing up some more plans so we’ll see I guess.

If I were doing this, I'd rearrange the Jack&Jill bathroom so that the entrance was on the hall. Then it could be used by guests. And I'd use the entire space of the main bathroom as the master.

@Jennifer K we we’re going to do that originally, but J&J remodel would have been $15k, only leaving $10k for master. Which wasn’t enough to update everything & we were trying not spend more than $20k anyway

Maybe you could take the small closet across from the entrance to the SE bedroom and combine it with your current master closet? Then keep the window in the bathroom by installing a pocket door into master bathroom, or maybe a barn door? That way you can save a little space. Move shower to external wall corner where there’s currently the small closet near the entrance, double vanity along new wall? Then you’d get light from the window bouncing off the vanity mirror. Maybe it would help the bathroom look bigger too. You probably already know this, but trying to keep plumbing where it is as much as you can will save you a lot of money! More money to put into finishes, or another project! Good luck! Remember, there are many good choices here, not just one!

You should consider changing the shape of your bath and have it longer and narrower -- from hall to outside wall -- putting all three of your bath fixtures lined up against the entry/foyer wall (WH and closets): toilet by the outside wall, tub in the middle and what's left between tub and hall wall would be for your vanity with its one sink. Then put the door from hallway to your bath and from hallway to your bedroom side by side, with a door from your bedroom directly into the bath be hidden behind your open bedroom door. Put your second master closet against the bath wall between the bed/bath/hall door and the outside wall. If necessary, change the side windows in the master bedroom to be the "headboard" or above the headboard.

@Cara Baxter that is exactly what we’re planning right now. The small second closet is shallow, so we’re putting built i drawers & shelves on bottom & 2 short rods coming out from back wall to hang a few items. Not ideal but it will work.

Can you push it back to line up with the back of your current closet?

No it backs up to the hallway. It’s actually a built in bookshelf.
