Some day, the kids will be older and their toys will be smaller, less pink and much more expensive. Plan your room for the not-too-distant future. What is your style, your furniture style, your art preference, your color preference for the room and for furniture? Is this your living room or your family room or den? Will this be your primary entertaining space? Will this be the room with the TV? Your fireplace looks nice lightly whitewashed. Does that casual brick treatment work with your furniture and decor style? Yes? You’ve got it made!

I agree that changing out the door to a black version will help update the look of your fireplace, but I do think that white brick is more clean and versatile, even as your tastes change over time.

If at all possible, I would recommend to mount the TV over the mantel so it better balances out with the fireplace door, because it’s size and placement now distract from your true focal point. Leaving the mantel in its natural wood will keep an element of warmth, and you could try introducing the same tone of wood in accessories such as a large basket or vases at the foot of the fireplace. Agree. Get some fireplace paint and paint the door black.

Add some large multisized candles. Some wind lighting around the candles during the summer months and burn a candle or 2 during the winter months. I line my fireplace with foil to catch the candle wax and burn a candle to keep the fireplace from getting too cold without the mess of burning wood.

PS. Don't worry about the toys!! Those will be gone soon enough. Then you have a few years and then you have grand kids toys!!!

I'd try another coat to whitewash the fireplace a little more. Sometimes it takes a few times. If you still don't like it you can always paint it out. I would switch out the fireplace doors, or paint them out. I would NOT paint the mantle. Leave the wood.

I would go with all white brick and black FP doors.
