Help with Kitchen Updating

Revamping this outdated kitchen in our new home! There is saltillo tile throughout the kitchen and dining area. I love the tile but I am having a hard time decorating with it. I have always leaned towards neutral colors but fell in love with this kitchen blue/gray color scheme with the saltillo off of pinterest. I'm on a budget since the home needs lots of updating. For now, I will be painting the cabinets and switching out the countertops. My style tends to lean toward rustic industrial. I also tend to really like the bold colors of Boho but I'm afraid to use color. I need help with an area rug, existing hardware (keep or replace?), Also countertops, thinking quartz? I found this dining table.. but need chair ideas. Dining room chandelier also needs to go! Appliances will be updated to SS as well.

Love navy cabinet with gold hardware. <3

yes.. I'm loving the blues right now. Really wanted some color instead of white cabinets. I think I'm just afraid to clash with the saltillo tiles.

Hi Erica, just saw your latest comment. I think if you do not like the cabinet color, you are right to want to paint. But it is some work. Very smart to try accessories and hardware first. Keep us updated, I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

    It will be awesome! <3<3

Erica, if you like blue, then that is a different story. A lot of people have accidentally picked greys that ended up looking blue. Blue is a complementary color to orange and will look good in there! Do some samples and see what you like. Some pros on this thread can probably help with color and these tiles.

drblount10, sounds good. I have some samples picked out to test tomorrow at the final walkthrough. Hopefully I'll make up my mind or just play it safe and wait on painting.

Navy will be brighter & make the light wood look even better with boho.

the colors I selected against the kitchen tiles. They definitely appear alot brighter in the room's light. wondering if I need to go darker?

I think this blue is too bright. You could go darker or just a more muted blue/gray like your inspiration pic. Good luck :)

    Slate blue or navy!!

The last three, I love the last one.

I like the December too. I'll get samples and test in the kitchen. I think home depot's lights were way off with the previous colors.

Hi. Saw photos above of these neutrals. The blue is almost one posted --

everdebbz.. that tile is the same colors I'm envisioning in that kitchen. I really like this dining setup and can picture it with pops of blue accessories. I just need to find a blue to match that blue in your tile. I might just purchase the tile to use as a color guide.

what do you call that? boho industrial?

    That looks good together

It might be a mixture of both

my husband is drawn towards industrial and I'm more partial to boho looks. We both love natural wood so I guess I was trying to blend them together and find the perfect balance.

The idea of getting paint chips and then painting tons of sample boards will help this color challenge. Deep, rich blues or greys will enhance the floor. Have you looked at Hale Navy (BM) or Urbane Bronze (SW)? Both are used frequently for a reason. If you paint first, then you can get great accessories to give more of a boho look. I would avoid the new countertop and save your money for the big redo you are planning a few years from now - Unless the cost of a new countertop isn’t too much foryou and the change would really make you happy. Thanks for including us in your redo. I think it will look great without spending a huge amount.

IMO your kitchen size works against selecting a dark color to paint the cabinets. You need all the visual room you can get for this kitchen.

Just paint the cabinets white to work with the architecture of your home.

As much as white is the easy way to go. I have two dogs and white shows everything. I have white cabinets in my work studio and they are always dirty. What if I did 2 tone cabinets. White on the top and Navy on the bottom?

Yes maybe on bottom of gorgeous with that floor And you could paint it white on tops and she don't like the Light wo OD

I would for sure start with getting the saltillo tile cleaned and sealed.....the color may change with cleaning!
I had the tile in a home, although it appeared more saturated in color than yours. I had a sage green on the walls, also a beigey yellow in the adjoining rooms. Cream cabinets and brown/black speckled granite. Red accents. It all looked great together and if I can find a photo I will post!

I thought a you when I saw this in BRY LA n E home

I really like the gray/blue look with your tile but BeverlyFLADeziner is also on point with the white. Maybe 2 tone would work! keep us posted :)

Brenda, ugghhh...I know. The more I play with the colors I think the white or cream looks better.

It's so hard making these decisions- I feel your pain! it's takes me forever to do anything because I frequently get overwhelmed by choice. Something will click!

    Type in Google navy cabinets

I vote blue lowers and off white uppers same as the wall color. You could also take doors off 1 or 2 cabinets for open shelving. What kind of blue do you like? I would go for a darker shade. Dark blue and terra cotta tiles go way back in many parts of the world. Take a gander:

I agree to err on the side of more muted shades of a dark blue, not a bright blue like a periwinkle.Think dark wash jeans. Have fun sampling as you settle into your new home!

New day and looked at initial photos -- nearby is good wood ceiling? -- any chance for adding more onto kitchen's ceiling - even lighter stain, or painted? Possibly all you'd need is a new countertop.

Is the kitchen somewhat closed off from view - I'd forget kitchen somewhat, and build into your vibe with curtains, rug, etc.....

I just now 'caught' your post-response to the tile, and glad I did. Maybe all cabinets the stone/natural color in the tile [or nearer a bit to cool tone of s.steel - does that make it a greige?]

Beverly said that a medium-dark cabinet wouldn't be best.... I wouldn't choose a blue personally, cause too opposite the floor's color.

Back to your industrial boho - search 'stories' on houzz for lots of guidance...

The emphasis in industrial-style spaces is on the architecture of the space and the structure of the furnishings — which means that the color palette tends toward crisp and clean white, subtle neutrals and black. Color, when it does appear, is often in the form of artwork and accessories, or used as a single bold statement hue. Great shades for industrial spaces: ◦Neutrals. Dove gray, putty, slate, espresso ◦Black and white. Architectural white, matte black ◦Pops of color. Fire engine red, navy blue, royal blue, chartreuse, teal."

Best piece of advice every given to me regarding paint: The bottom 3 colors on a paint strip are usually for accents--pillows, dishes, etc. If are drawn to those, just move up a couple rows on the strip. I painted my cabinets sever, several years ago and used paint specifically made for cabinets. Good luck with your reno. It is gonna be awesome.

I understand the arguments for white, but before you “give in” to that choice, get various paint and color some poster board and hang it on your cabinets. That’s the only way to really KNOW if color will make you happy AND look good. I would hate for you to just “concede” to white. (If you do, you need to make sure to ask the Houzz pros which one.). Yes, white usually works well in a smaller kitchen, but color can make it cozy. The rugs above are fabulous and would certain dress up any cream colored kitchen.

I vote for the dark blue/grey lowers, and keeping the upper cabinets white. This will be a dramatic change, look great with the floor, and much more interesting than an all white kitchen. It will also be a lot less work just painting the lowers, as well as it will keep the kitchen from looking like a cave. Good luck! You seem to be on the right track!

    Hey Erica D.,

i would suggest getting new hardware for your cabinets If you are set on painting them a darker color it might be nice to put on hardware that Pops. You should check out what Century Hardware has to offer. I know that you mentioned adding color and hardware just so happens to be a great way to do that! Maybe a cool painted ceramic knob or a more colorful finish like Satin Brass or Rose Gold?

thank you for all the suggestions! I'm heading out to the paint shop today. I found that blue gray in the original inspiration pic I posted. When I'm in the kitchen, the original color on cabinets look almost pink beige and it's seen throughout the house on trims. I want to paint everything a white or cream color. I played around with two tone of paint in the pic.

Yes, there is wood in the living room. My home is a tri level. I love it. I would not put wood on kitchen ceiling. Here is a pic looking from the bottom floor.

See the beigy pink paint even on the fireplace.

Hello Erica, hope you and the family are well. Any updates?

Hi. We moved in to our new home on March 11th. COVID-19 and social distancing took over in that week. We were able to update our guest bathroom and install wood floors, replacing the carpet before businesses closed down.

I did get some paint samples for the kitchen cabinets, but after living with the kitchen I am now planning on white paint, black hardware (using the existing handles), and butcher block countertops. I guess it's true to live in things for a bit before making design decisions! We also updated appliances. Our microwave is in the garage waiting to be installed next.

The house is slowing coming together because I've had to put a hold on things with not working because of COVID-19. I am going to start painting the doors and trim, fireplace white. Kitchen will be last project. Unpacking boxes has also been alot of work. Here's some pictures of guest bathroom before and after. Also the kitchen, with some of new appliances.

Thanks for the updates, Erica and congrats on getting in your new home! ♥♥ the new guest bath, dining, and kitchen appliances! I know about unpacking and moving so take your time, you have plenty to do. The kitchen is neutral so it will last awhile, and the floor is cool. Glad you are well, and settling in!

    That looks nice!
