Hi,

We are looking to build nice corner shelves in our kitchen, and have found a lot of insipiring design ideas on Houzz. Now come the time to execute them, however, and we are not sure how best to proceed.

Here is a picture that shows best what we're after: shelves that are (a) made from nice wood, and we'll likely want to match the red oak of our floors, (b) nicely thick, at least 1", maybe 1.5" thick, and (c) suspended on hidden hardware. We are looking to build three shelves, in a corner area that is roughly 2 by 3 feet.

The few specific questions I have for the amazing Houzz community are:

• How should I go about sourcing the wood? Home Depot and Lowe's only carry thinner (3/4") red oak boards, should I be looking more at places that work directly with contractors? (e.g. TW Perry in my Washington, DC area)
• Any advice on what kind of hardware best to use to mount the shelves in an "invisible" way? I have previously installed IKEA shelves (engineered wood, not solid) that had the mounting hardware go into the drilled holes in the shelf, but I don't know if that's easy to do with raw wood. Have people had good results with some solutions or, as importantly, bad experiences with others?
• What would be the typical depth of such shelves? Theoretically I thought of making them a foot deep, but when I looked at wooden boards that were a foot wide they looked too deep. Would 10" be more appropriate?
• Finally, since this will be in the corner, any advice on joining the shelves at a 45deg angle, vs. trying to attach two rectangular pieces together?
