Thermador PRD305WHU

Wanted to get some feedback on either this particular model or Thermador in general and oven operation. We purchased this model recently and within two days of installation noticed it burning food in the oven. Upon checking with two generic oven thermometers we noticed that on Bake and almost all other settings, the temperature was 50 degrees over what the dial was set for which was 350. So it read 400 degrees and was rock solid at that temp and did not fluctuate.

Called Thermador and they provided us with a service company to come check and using a thermocouple verified exactly what we were seeing. This then prompted a call back to Thermador where he actually put the phone on speaker and we listened to their tier 2-3 service tell him/us that this was absolutely normal and we just need to either dial back temps or change cooking times etc. This of course got me quite upset and resulted in a heated discussion. He also stated I could exchange the range but the next would operate the same.

After the call and later I decided to call a few other service companies and one told me that this was acceptable per Thermador as well.
At this point I decided to call Wolf and Viking support to ask what were acceptable temp ranges on their ovens which I was happy to hear +/- 5-10 degrees over set points which is what I always thought was industry standard.

Later in the day I checked again and decided to chart all settings/readings for a 20 minute cycle on each from 300-450 and each had actual readings 50 degrees over the set point so this was linear all the way across.

At this point I am so upset from Thermador’s response that I’m ready to rip out all these week old appliances and exchange for Wolf. The company I purchased from has been exceptional and I believe would have no problem doing this.

I just believe there’s likely an easy fix to this on the PCB etc but they are unwilling to capitulate that this is not normal. Has anyone else seen this scenario with their Thermador equipment or am I just crazy and my wife should just bake at 275 when a recipe calls for 325? Thx!!

Many ovens have a user-accessible temperature correction/adjustment. Check your instruction manual. The disparity is linear so making a correction of -50° will fix it (if such an adjustment is available) ... otherwise, simple workaround IS set the temp 50°F lower. Your choice whether that is reasonable vs. the effort to replace with different appliances.

    Dadoes,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this dual fuel range has no electronic adjustability. I guess my whole issue is that if I buy an expensive oven I should be able to have it operate as an oven should and not get a ridiculous response from the manufacturer that 50 degrees over the set point is acceptable and is how it operates. Two days into this new oven imho this is unacceptable for them to admit this isn’t correct. :-)

I searched Thermador.com for the model you reference. There are two choices PRD305WH/01 and PRD305WHU/02.

The user guides for both reference "fine tuning the oven" via an adjustment of +/- a maximum of 35°F in 5°F increments. Quote from the instructions:

    - Begin from the Standby mode and select Settings.
    - Press the left < or > to scroll Temp Offset: Right/Left Oven.
    - Press the right < or > to set the temperature (offset).
    - Press Enter.

It's not the 50°F adjustment that you need but -35°F at least would be something. You don't find that adjustment to be available on your unit?

Yes those manuals seem to include instructions for the 36” and up models all lumped together. These ovens do not have any electronic panel or adjustment whatsoever

    Ah.

    There are two other possibilities.

Some mechanical thermostats have an adjustment screw in the shaft, accessible by removing the knob (mini screwdriver or maybe an Allen wrench required).

Some have an offset adjustment incorporated into the knob via a notched cam or some such on the backside.

Yes or I believe a potentiometer on the PCB likely in the back of the oven. The issue is they couldn’t even bring themselves to admit there was a problem while a repairman was present at the house who could make any type of electronic or mechanism change. The repairman unfortunately is in the middle his suggestion was that we should document more buying and burning of food to prove that there’s an issue?!? This is just so wrong to me and hence wondering if I should just swap it all out with another brand. I could swap out the range itself but If it did have the same issue then I’m bank at square one. I don’t want to put the retailer through this either. This is why I really wanted to see if any other end users had witnessed this type of oven operation.

Yep believe me I’ve checked about everywhere for info. Need real world experience. Honesty I think I’ll be sending it all back as I absolutely kid you not, the last appliance was installed this morning (Thermador microwave) and when wife got home from work tried to heat up the last oven burnt brownie and a cup of water to realize the brand new microwave didn’t work either. Makes all the noise but no heat. I’m ready to huff some Krylon Gold at this point. :-)

Bumping to top. There has to be someone out there with any of the new version ranges that’s noticed a 50 degree variance on temperature set point.

Yes, mine is too. He is going to replace the thermostat - parts ordered - frustrating for this expensive oven can't even have the temperature calibrated. I pulled the knob and didn't see any adustment, but I haven't taken to housing off behind the knob yet. It's under warranty so don't want to mess with it - so I'm stuck setting the knob at a lower temp for now.
