Many years I knew a lady who most of her garden planted with plastic plants. It was quite stunning actually. Every now and then she would meticulously water her garden with a hose. Eventually found out she just enjoyed watering them just like real plants.

My friend had this white barrel cactus that she watered all summer. One day it just blew over. Turned out this cacti died a long time ago. She was proud of this plant. Even took pictures.

Some silk/plastic flowers look pretty good from a distance but when they are still in full bloom in the dead of winter is when it becomes pretty obvious.

I once worked at an office and the plastic plant there began to lose leaves until only a stem was left. I asked one of the co-workers about it and she laughed -- said one of the employees had watered it every week. The joke was she watered it to death!

I would blame it on "air plants"!!!

Holy carp!! This story really takes the cake......that is a plastic one!!!!

Recently my granddaughters wanted to go to Chick fil a. There was a succulent on the table. Of course I didn't want to pick it up or poke at it, but visually I couldn't tell if it was real or fake. I just assumed it was real since they usually put live on the tables. I could see how this might happen.

Our local Chick-fil-A has cut flowers on each table. I wonder if they keep them for one day or more. They are usually carnations or Alstroemeria with a fern frond.

Some fake plants do look very real and it takes a bit of investigation to determine if they are fake or not. If you could pull the plant out of the pot then roots or lack of (probably one big glue glob) would be a sure sign. I think the stores would frown on such behavior though.

The Thai (Asian) clay orchids/Adeniums look very good to pass as real from a short distance but over a few years they will start to fade especially if near a window.

aegis1000: Yes she did keep her house neat and clean - a bit OCD too. It was a bit sad though - she was a lonely widow in her 70s then.

Years back when my mom was visiting from India she fell in love with those plastic plants. She must have bought a suitcase full of those to take back. She swore they look much better after a shower !!!

Two years is a heck of a long time to not notice something basic like that. On the up side, her ego probably had a boost. I am such a great plant mom!!! I hope she doesn’t have a mental disorder and was imagining it growing or changing.

We had a neighbor who would walk around in a gorgeous sundress with shears and a flower basket but we never saw her work in the garden. Only work was done by some of the local teenagers. One year she forget and left the forsythia out in August. Seems as though she would "plant" plastic flowers throughout her yard and change them with the season. Guess she didn't want to get her manicure dirty!

Sounds like a plan to me!

This story reminds me of those I read/hear once in a while, where the woman isn’t feeling well, goes to the hospital, and gives birth to a 7 pound baby... and she’s surprised because she never knew she was pregnant! How in the world is that possible?

Windymess, it is possible. We had 3 "I'm not pregnant " births when I was working the ED. 2 happened in the waiting room bathroom. They mentally block the possibility.
