Does this refinishing look good?

Hi,

I’m talking to some hardwood refinishing people in my area, and I think I found someone who can work in my time frame and budget. However, I asked for reference photos, and this is what he showed me for stairs hes worked on:

Does it look alright? Any glaring mistakes you can see? Also what else should I ask about before having him start on my floor and stair refinishing?

There is nothing 'glaringly obvious' with these stairs. There is also nothing spectacular about them either. The stringer is clean. No major drips. Again nothing showy. Just a basic stain and coat on soft wood treads. There can be two reasons for lack of 'showy':

1. The WOOD itself isn't very show so there is nothing to 'show off' about it either

2. The stain could be a snick uneven but this could be the WOOD being a difficult wood to deal with...again it could be the wood and not the wood worker.

Remember, stairs are tricky. Right after that they are tricky...and then they are tricky. And not many people get a flooring guy to stain their stairs.

Remember: you have chosen someone in your price range. For me, with a budget conscious choice, there is nothing that sets of alarm bells. But each stair is different. Why? Because stairs are tricky.

You want a photo looking downward on the stairs, so you can see the top of the treads. Ask for a photo looking down the staircase. So, you can examine several treads. Also, ask for a photo of a floor job. You need to see the sanding quality.

Based on these photos, the risers look thirsty.

Perhaps you could ask to go see his work in person. That may seal the deal.

If the owner is happy with the work, they probably will say yes.

This guy was actually under my original budget by $2k, so I was like maybe too good to be true, or too bad actually haha. I’m just gonna go with another team instead, the other pictures this guy showed me looked not that good

Same advice for new guy. Get references and see in person if possible.
