Could you show us the existing house and drawings showing what is proposed?

This is an old pic of the house. It’s a super basic colonial. I do not have drawing of the addition yet. I just don’t want to move forward on the flush front unless I can get some sense for how it will look.

You should be talking to an architect, not about the pictures, but about the addition design; not the builder.

We are adding onto the side of our garage-under colonial.

What side? What are you adding -- what rooms, how big etc?

The house is only 24’ deep, so we can’t afford to jog the addition in

When it comes to house additions, there is a long and successful tradition of adding on to existing houses with smaller extensions on one or both ends and the rear of the house.

Tell your builder to stick to construction and look to your architect for the design directions.

We’re adding a front to back family room over two new garage bays that use the length of the old bays to extend the garage. This is allowing us to make the dining room part of the kitchen, and convert the formal living room into the dining room. The addition will be 18x24.

No joke though, you need an architect more than a builder. A challenging site needs a better design response, not a standard design response that fits awkwardly.
