I’d love to know if I should change the bed spread. I think I’d like a solid bed spread and then add throw pillows with patterns. What color lamps and lamp shades and then curtains.

You have a very neutral room right now, so I think you can add whatever bedding and draperies that you love. I hope you will add some art, too, which will liven up the space. Remember to buy tall enough bedside lamps, around 27 inches. Most people buy lamps that are too short.

That’s helpful but I don’t know how to tie colors or palettes together. Any ideas on a palette and then tying it together? For example if I get a solid bed spread then want more textured pillows or lamp shades I don’t want it too matchy matchy but I want it to flow.

Have you ever tried Design Seeds? You can pick a color you like and then see complementary colors. Once you've decided on a color palette, then you can use that as your guideline when viewing textiles to see if they mesh. Alternatively, pick out one item that you love, like a pillow, a rug or draperies and then use that item as your color inspiration and basis for all other purchases. HERE is an article that might help you.

One other suggestion would be to take advantage of the free design services offered by places like Pottery Barn. Once you see how they pull the room together in a way you like, you can choose what to purchase from them or what you can substitute from another vendor/store.

you have the start of a lovely room with your furniture and headboard. I noticed this pic in your ideabook. based on your initial comment below, this looks like the direction you would like to go... in addition to the white bedding, i would also suggest to get a chandelier vs the ceiling fan... it would help in the look you are going for IMO.. I would start with the white bedding and getting some accent pillows that you love.. the pic shows a merlot accent, is that what you like?

Thank you! Yes I love this look but we had white bedding before and washed weekly but can’t keep it white because of oily skin or cosmetic products. But maybe we just have to buy sheets more frequently. What other accent color would you use? I don’t love the Merlot. Also how about drapes? Any ideas for the night stands for decor? Or what height the lamp and lamp shade should be?

if you like the look I would say white is a critical component... did you use bleach on the sheets... I do sometimes with ours....I would say getting bedding is the first thing to do so if you dont want white, would need to discuss other options before moving on to drapes. white drapes would look great with white bedding and your dark furniture

I was just reading about tricks to keep things white. I am going to try once more with white and see if oxiclean and soaking will help.

I like your bedding. I think if you add a dark navy blue blanket across the bed and some other navy blue accents similar to the picture I’ve attached. I would put a plant in the corner where you have that chair, add some long wide and tall curtains to that window to make it look more substantial could be a good start You could try moving the chair over by the window with a side table with the lamp off the long dresser. Try moving the king dresser closer to the door to make room for the chair angled in the window corner. Add a navy throw to the chair and a small lumbar pillow. I like trying to make the things I already own work by moving them around before I go buy new things. Look at your other rooms and see if there’s some things you can bring into the bedroom to refresh it and make it more cohesive. Put a picture over the nightstand and maybe add a plant and some books to style it.

I would suggest some new drapery. Long panels would be lovely. I also like your bedding. You may want to make it more substantial with some Euro shams, pillows and/or coverlet. You are off to a great start. Good luck!

Thanks for these Theresa Janssen. I like a lot of them. Any rules of thumb on lamp shade color or lamp color and what would look best? The ones that you shared have a lot of varieties as far as color. Would appreciate your thoughts on that also. Thanks!

I think the lamp shades all work with the lamp they are paired with and the lamps are on the larger size as you have tall ceilings and I think you need larger size lamps to work with the tall ceilings. I was going for neutral shades that work with your current bedding or if you decide to go more white with your bedding. I was also looking at your insp pic for direction.

I see a lot of wall space, with vaulted ceilings that add to the expanse of wall. People often make the mistake of putting up art and photos that are too small to do anything other than disrupt the view. Large--even oversized--art makes a real statement and you can easily move things around to change the view anytime. I am not connected at all, but several years ago, I started purchasing from art.com and then from lorazombie.com. Prints can even be produced on an unframed, canvas-like material that gives the impression that the paintings are original. (I also agree with the comment about making sure the lamps are large enough--for both appearance and usefulness. Dimmer switches are a "must.") I realize it's just been painted, but painting one of the walls a darker color or a darker shade of the same color also adds depth to a room. Maybe get a quilt that incorporates that darker shade, too.

Along the same lines as oversized art, you might replace the little valance with full drapes that reach the floor, also possibly in the chosen accent color.

We bought the bedding first and pulled the paint color from it. Haven’t found a headboard we like. But the point of my post is to consider pinup lamps. With a CPAP, So-Clean, clock radio and blanket control on my side, the lamps cleared valuable space. Good luck!
