Changing of texture in foundation slab?

Hi folks - first time / new homeowner!

Two walls (foundation slabs) in my unfinished basement appear to show a visible marker / gradient running horizontally from one wall to the next (see arrows). To the touch, everything feels fine above and below this marker. I see no cracks, however the presence of this gradient has me curious??

Thank you, in advance, if folks can decipher what this gradient / marker means.

    Hi cat_ky - good point... we had a solid night of rain last night here in MD, so it likely could be absorption of water.

    If you follow this horizontal gradient to the right, you have the egress window maybe 1ft above this line, so yes... it likely is water now that you bring this up. (I was worried it was foundation issues since I had several cracks sealed upon moving in.)

    It could be a concern, since it seems like your basement exterior was never waterproofed, or if it was, it wasnt done properly. That dampness line should not be there. All that moisture etc, could start your basement walls to deteriorate. Also, is the grading done correctly on the exterior, so that water drains away from the house on all sides? You cant finish that basement, unless that problem is corrected. Are your gutters and downspouts in good condition, and cleaned, and no clogs? Do the downspouts drain away from the house, far enough, so that the water runs away from the house? This problem should be corrected.

    This looks like a relatively new house. If they followed code there should be an exterior perimeter french drain outside the footing,and it should connect to a sump pump well. They may have also run a drain inside the footing that connects to the sump. Make sure that drainage and pump system is working.

    Don't worry about concrete walls being exposed to water. Concrete remains porous forever, and in most cases is not damaged by being damp or wet. However, you do need to control moisture in your basement if you want finished walls.

    If there is a small amount of moisture "in" the concrete you can install a moisture barrier on the inside of the wall and it should be fine. However, if you get additional water coming through under some conditions (rain, etc.), then you have to stop that water. You may need additional exterior grading and waterproofing, combined with a sump pump for the outside drainage if you plan to finish the basement. If you still have water penetration after the exterior work, you may need to install a french drain inside the wall. The water would come in and through the wall to the french drain, and then be removed with a sump pump.

    Could be a different truck of concrete. Doesn't look like moisture in photo.

    Jump to the chase:

    It's actually not water. I'll explain below.

    The picture I attached above shows a visible horizontal gradient. My initial reaction was possible water infiltration (as stated initially by @cat_ky).

    So yesterday, what I did was follow this line /gradient over to the left of this picture as far as possible. I took some pictures at this point of origin and chatted with a Structural Engineer licensed in my state. The Engineer said that it is likely due to two trucks whereby one was slightly later than usual. That's when it finally made sense because if you rub your hand over that horizontal gradient in the photo, it feels perfectly blended-in... but if you rub your hand over the origin (far left of this picture), you can feel some very slight changes, implying two batches / trucks were involved.

    Bottom line: spoke with Engineer and was told it's likely two trucks of concrete.
