This is interesting. Some say MH is thorny and others say not so much. I wonder if it gets thornier upon maturity. Hmmmm.

I am anxious to hear how this does for everyone. I did order it last year but unfortunately my friend, not realizing it was own root and not grafted, planted it very deeply and with our spring floods it died. He is getting a replacement from David Austin this spring so hopefully we'll have better luck. He ordered Bathsheba and Teasing Georgia at the same time and that is doing fabulously. It is so disappointing though since climbers can take time to establish that this one has to start from scratch again this year. Roseylady, I was able to get cuttings for Autumn Sunset locally and they all took. What gorgeous leaves this Rose has. Thank you so much for your offer. I was also able to start cuttings for a lovely apricot yellow called Golden Olymp. I have planted all three of these in my garden as well since they grew quite large from cuttings filling out gallon pots. I'm sharing my extras with a neighbor also. 🤗

Malvern Hills continues to be one of my favourite roses. It's perfect for my climate. Extremely healthy, extremely floriferous. Mine is not thornier than any other climber I have. The spot where I have it is rather wild....it's growing over a large woodpile. This rose throws huge basal canes in the blink of an eye....it's vigorous! The canes are very flexible and easy to train....really some of the best canes for training in my garden. The flowers are so delicate and beautiful. And, on top of all this...it's scented!

vaporvac...I'm glad you got 'Autumn Sunset'! I really like this rose as well. I agree about the foliage...it's a real asset to the rose.

That is gorgeous! I love how you have it growing up the poles. It seems that maybe you could keep it under control that way? Maybe cut out some of the older canes each year so there won't be too many at any one time?

I had dismissed this rose as, according to others, being too rampant. But these photos...I can't stop looking!

Ooh, Vaporvac, I planted Ghislaine de Feligonde a couple of years ago. Hasn't done much yet, But if it grows up to look like this, I will be very happy indeed.

Vapor, I think you live in a castle. All we get to see are intriguing little glimpses of stone and antique windows, with a few balustrades thrown in as romantic backdrop. Show us more. I like when vapor shows pictures because from what I can tell we have very similar challenges.

I remember seeing stone balustrades with new climbers planted nearby- looking forward to seeing how those turned out!

That is GdeF. It is a fantastic Rose in quite a bit of shade. I had at least nine roses in this position and they all went backwards until I put her there. She is now maybe 15 ft tall this was in her first year after being planted out. She only blooms once however but I think once I take some volunteer trees down that are really shading the area much too much I may get more from her. Unless she's just considered a once Bloomer. I don't know. I really want to get the pink version of her.

You guys are very funny but I appreciate the comps. I wish my neighbors felt the same. This area is below the ballast trades and actually supports that area in part. JC oh, those balustrade are completely filled out now with new dawn and Viking Queen. The new dawn are almost a hundred years old but I move them around and make babies from the original two. Let me rustle up a picture from this year.

Most people don't find that very romantic. I think it's just us nutcases. It was nicer before I had to enclose everything for the stupid deer. Here are the new dawn Etc. I'm sure you've seen this picture .

I don't have a lot so I just reuse the same one. :-( it's hard to get everything in the same picture. And not everything blooms at the same time. Here are the new dawn cascading over the balustrade. This is my favorite part.

Somewhere I have another picture of the other side where it completely covers the whole thing. I know people hate New Dawn but I'm telling you in the right place this Rose is the best.:-)

Vapor, I love your New Dawns. This is how they are supposed to be--wild and free to drape over things, and your ballustrade is perfect. What could the neighbors object to? I wish I had the setting, wall or fence that you do. I know I would have appreciated this rose more, instead of resenting it. Diane

I was just reading through this thread, those are beautiful pictures vapor and I'm so glad you were able to get autumn sunset, I pray mine makes it through the move but when I planted it I ran into an old foundation buried in the ground. I got frustrated and just planted it on top so I'm not sure how easy digging it up will be.

Hopefully someday I can get new dawns that grow like yours, stunning!

I’m going to try and train one up to a second story balcony and wrap the other around a cedar tree trunk.

Diane, I think my Neighbour probably just feel I could spend more time on other aspects of my house than the garden. However I really probably should retract that comment because I've had new neighbors for the past year-and-a-half who are absolute dolls. My old neighbors cost me many sleepless nights. In fact one of my new neighbors edges all my property down the road and also on my yard. He says he was going crazy during lockdown and was happy to help and if there's anything else I want trimmed just let him know.! My other new next door neighbor grows roses! And he's so much fun to talk to about garden design and plants. He's the one that is growing Roald Dahl and Lady of Shalott on his front fence, as well as the most gorgeous Chrysler Imperials I've ever seen! His front yard is in full sun with 0 shade and it really shows with how well his roses do compared to mine. So I guess I now have nice Neighbors that have been very sweet to me thus far. I'm trying to return the favor.:-)

Summers, I guess the nearest style would be neo-Georgian although at this time They loved to just throw it all together so there's some Italianate in there too and also a bit of French! LOL!

Jackie's Victorian house and garden is like an oil painting. and another girl ( I can't remember her name, well fit, gardening with gym outfit) who also has a lovely Victorian home and garden that would stop traffic. And it must be nice to have rose gardeners in the neighborhood! :-) I wish I have a stone wall like yours. I found a lot of antique wrought iron fences hiding in a row of bushes & tall weeds between side yard and a garden ( veggie garden area (?) without any plants , and more are leaning against a firewood storage place. I am thinking those would be great for climbers if we could move them. It might need 3 guys to move just one piece. They would be high maintenance though, need to be painted every a couple years.......

You might be able to get them powder coated.

@Rosylady (PNW zone 8) so I was about to ask you to follow up on Malvern since I live in Portland, OR, but I saw your later follow up in the thread. :) Is yours in shade? Sun? I want to let Malvern go a bit feral on the north side of our house. It's shady but not dark.

Robert....My Malvern Hills is doing fabulously! It's one of my favourite roses in my whole garden. I have mine growing on top of a six foot tall wood pile, which is underneath two very tall fir trees. I would describe the site as part shade. It gets sun in the morning, then again in the late afternoon. No disease at all, and in almost continual bloom.

Mel’s Heritage is my best climbing roseBut I would not recommend it for a north wall. He does not rebloom well in shade here. Place him in full sun and you will be generously rewarded.

Dr. Robert K can take some shade and would probably be a better option to Mel’s Heritage for a North Wall. Lovely rose which the Bees love. Wish more people tried it.

Dianela, I'm glad that you said that about putting it in full sun. I moved mine to the new property near our carport area. It was blooming alot at the old property. Here it has just kinda sat there. I realize now that it might be in too much shade. It gets full morning sun but in the afternoon a tree is casting shade on that whole area now.

I think I might need to move it somewhere sunnier. If I can get it up and over the carport, it might be okay. Its not that big right now since I cut it back hard to move.

Sultry if you think after it gets bigger it would be getting more sun just give it some time. My Mel also does not like being moved. I moved one of mine and it took an entire year to get going again.

sultry....thank you! Yes, Malvern Hills is fragrant, in that Hybrid Musk kind of way. It's mild scent from what I can remember, but it can waft. It's a truly superlative rose, especially its health, vigor, and floriferousness. I wish more people would grow it!

Robert...Thank you! I also grow Mel's Heritage, and I love it too! Mine grows in full sun, and it is absolutely giagantic! It's an epic rose...HUGE!! It's also healthy; wonderful scent, gorgeous apricot flowers.

Another climber you may want to consider is Renae....everyone who grows it raves about it. I have one, but it's still in a small pot waiting to go into the ground.

Robert....I just planted Lavender lassie last spring and I am so in love with this rose!!! I have it trained on the side of my white house, and it got about seven feet tall in one season...from a tiny cutting that was half dead! Its such a romantic rose...very full and drapey. Malvern Hills has more of a wild rose look and Lavender Lassie has an old fashioned look. Both great in part sun, both healthy, both flower very well.

You definitely need both :)

Robert , many roses are good for shady spots. I have New Dawn, Renae, Veilchenblau, Doctor Robert Korns, Darlow's Enigma, Ghislaine de Feligonde, and New Face. They all do great in less than 2hr sun. However, Renae is literally thornless, not a single prickle from crown to tip. Maybe it's a thing to you since you said you want that rose to go "feral". It'll be a bless if you want to walk into the bush to prune it one day. Just a thought.

Robert, I love Doctor Robert Korns very much and just awarded it the title of star of the rose in 2022. It has the same name as you. LOL. I got it from RVR and kept it in the pot for one year. This is the year one(2021) in the ground.

And these are the pictures in 2022. It's healthy, prolific, and looked wonderful especially in the spring flush. The stems aren't stiff at least in the first three years so it's easy to train.

BTW, the pink on the right is New Face. They both are great roses in shade and produce a lot of 8'-10' long stems in three years. A closeup.

You guys are killing me talking about Lavender Lassie. And chance it's hardy in zone 5? Of my 2 hybrid musks (Sally Holmes and Guirlande d'Amour) Sally is only crown hardy and too early to tell for my new GdA.

I imagine GdeF will be hardy as it is huge here, while Sally will experexperience die back from time to time. Lavender Lassie is rock solid to negative F over multiple years. It deosnt bloom great so may need more sun after the firtst flush. GdeF aksi ibkt guves ibe fkysgm byt Un gioug with tree limbs cut it improves. You might want to look at Ceske Praci Cest for a large small-flowered bloomer. Some limited rebloom that is iproving with age. Gorgeous rose, but rampant.

I saw that Burling is carrying CPC but no fragrance. Unfortunately Sally Holmes has absolutely no fragrance for me either and keeps dying to the crown even in one of my warmest full sun spots, though she's pretty when she grows the big clusters. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. Giving it another year for sure. A lot of my roses are about to be in year 3 and I know I'll be casting a critical eye around. I don't really care about rebloom so Lavender Lassie might be worth a go.

Well if you dont care so much about rebloom then a whole world of roses opens fo yo

I find the rebloom much faster on Lavender Lassie if she's deadheaded. Also, in my cooler climate, her initial bloom lasts a very long time, particularly in afternoon shade! She also breezed through the wettest spring on record here with not a single blackspot.

I have the perfect climate for Hybrid Musks...I know you are much drier in CO Magpie. But I also saw her in perfect health and bloom in Sacramento, CA!
