Can I stain this brick?

I have seen several stains that work on exterior brick. However, I have 70's brick that has a type of german schmear to it. Now sure if the stain will go through the white parts? Did anyone have any luck doing so? Thanks!

Personally, I don't think it looks bad, but that's just me.

Painted and stained brick go in and out of fashion, but unadulterated brick is always in style, even brick like that. And generally speaking, once you put anything on brick, especially paint, you no longer have a near-zero-maintenance house. That can't help but have an effect on its value.

Your call, but I suggest that you work on making the trim and plantings look good with what you have, and live with it.

I'm not an expert in this, but applying a stain on a surface like that sounds like a disaster in the making.

I sure am not fond of the look, but, like kudzu9, I think applying stain to that surface, is not the solution to making it look better, unfortunately.

I think trying to stain that flaky German schmear would be a huge, uneven mess.

Perhaps if you shared a wide view pic of the front of the house you could get some suggestions about easier ways to improve curb appeal.
