Pickled Oak - Design delima

We just purchased a home with Pickled Oak throughout the home. Cabinets, doors, moldings... I have gotten mixed reviews from friends and family. Some people love it and think it is unique, others hate it and say it looks dated. I personally wish it was more "beachy/whitewashed" and less pink.

I would like to replace the bedrooms that have carpet with wood floors, but am just not sure about color combinations. Do I paint all the woodwork white? Do I whitewash it to lessen the pink color? And then what color of flooring would you choose?

Also, we are not keeping the paint color and will be painting the walls either a very light gray or white. These pictures are from the listing.

Whatever you do, before you commit to a large scale wall painting project please do large test swatches on the wall.

I bought a vacation home which has these pickled pink cabinets in the kitchen. Words do not adequately express how much I hate them. I plan to do a kitchen reno at some point down the road, so I set about finding the right wall color to hopefully make me hate them even a little bit less until I can get rid of them.

Some paint colors will intensify the pinkness, others are almost magical and can downplay the pinkness. If you google around online you'll come up with color recommendations. I started there, but can tell you one of the first colors I picked happened to make my pink cabinets look almost bubble gum pink. It was hideous. Sigh.

I did end up finding the perfect color, which really does downplay the pink very nicely. It's a tan color with just a very faint apricot hue to it, and fortunately for me it actually makes those pink cabinets look like a normal color. Still can't wait to get rid of them, but at least they don't scream PINK anymore.

B.M. Granite for doors.

For walls in eggshell, for trim in semi-gloss and flat for ceilings.

That. gives you a lovely back drop and the option to bring in other colors in rugs/fabrics.

I would just live with it for awhile. After painting the walls and moving your stuff in, it may blend in. And it may come back into style by the time you are trying to decide what to do with it. :) There seems to be a lot of it, so it would be a commitment to change all of it. I would rather the wood match until you decide whether to do something :) Lovely home!

Depending on how much you are willing to do…you can add stripper onto the wood and scrub with #1 or 2 steel wool and That finish comes right off…look it up on YouTube very process!

Oh my. I had this in our home in Atlanta, Ga in the late 80s and it was quite the rage. Ours was stained wood so removal was not an option. Not sure how this finish was applied, but find that out first. Then you can decide what options are best whenever you make a decision to change. It won’t be simple in any case.

Flo they have so many YouTube videos that remove that pickled stain that was on the oak cabinets in the 80’s we had them too!🙄 we ended up painting ours back in the 90’s…
