I think it is the two college dorm looking desks that are part of the issue. You've created a FP focal point and then thrown a cheap knock-down type cabinet up against it. I don't see much trim in your home; just door frames and a hand rail that are white and no baseboards or crown molding, so we can't really tie the FP into that. I don't get the little bird decal above the mantel. Actually, the art should be lowered enough to cover him up since art should visually tie to the mantel and be about 5" above it. If you want that blue color to be your accent the room, you should sprinkle it around. I think the different colors at the FP are confusing the issue (6 if you count the picture frame and the brass FP screen.) I would try painting the screen and mantel black and see if that helps. Left of the FP is a good place for a tall, green plant/tree. When you get a chance, replace the leggy coffee table with a grounded piece. There are too many legs in the room.

The blue is not right. I believe gray would be a better choice.

The blue does not work for me and I agree those desks have got to go they cheapen the look of that room totally.
