I’d remove the sconces and hang a large piece of art on that wall, such that the midpoint of the art is 58” from the floor. This canvas comes in 48” by 48” size. Go big! If you need more light you could put a standing lamp in the corner.

Thank you Carole, we thought about removing them as well but they tie the room together quite well w the matching chandelier. I should have mentioned I’m trying to avoid taking down the lights. :)

I'd consider a large, long rectangular painting to hang just beneath the sconces, not in between them. Not this particular piece, just giving an idea of size and scale.

The middle of your art piece should be 60" from the floor. Maybe your art piece would look best hanging below the sconces, not between them. What is the distance from the bottom of the sconces to the floor?

Just thinking outside the box, can your sconces be turned upside down?

I like your dining room I would add a sisal rug and a nice piece of art. I like artfully walls. There selections are many and not that expensive

partim - the sconces are 78" from the bottom to the floor. Cannot be flipped upside down.

So you have plenty of room to hang a wide art piece under the sconces, and still have the center of the art at 60" from the floor. It could be That's what I'd do as @IdaClaire suggested above. If you art work is 20" high then the top of it is 8" below the sconces. This one is 60" x 20".

The sconces don't "tie the room together" -- they just duplicate the look of the chandelier that's 4 feet away and distract from it. Removing the sconces would allow you to choose a piece of art that's better scaled to the room and to the table -- a large horizontal piece (with art light if desired). Keeping the sconces means you have to choose a tall and narrow work, leaving most of the wall empty, or a long low horizontal work, which is likely to feel unnatural in height. I think you're letting your affection for the fixtures cloud your judgement of the best overal design.

My husband suggested replacing the fixtures w pictures lights and doing a photo gallery. Perhaps adding picture lights and a large piece of art under might work as well?

I agree with acm...but with the caveat...if you want to keep the sconces try one on each side of the doors..the chandelier seems too high..and not centered on the table?...a magnificent rug with color or a more casual jute rug would work here ...but the runner needs to be more interesting...with some texture ...perhaps shorter....in an open weave straw material?...the candlesticks may be too traditional ..since the table is rustic and the chairs are more modern ...the art does need to be oversized and offer some color ...as it is important in this picture...to add drama and as everything else is so monochromatic

Nothing small on the big wall will live up to the drama of this room...the high ceilings ...oversized statement furniture..all call for an equally dramatic piece of art

Those sconces are so high that I think a suitable wide piece of art, or arrangement of pieces, would fit easily under them.

Yes, completely agree with partim. You are absolutely not limited to cramming a piece of vertically oriented art between the sconces. Play around with marking out possibilities on your wall with painter's tape and see what you think looks best. It's good to think outside the box.

If there is enough space, adding a narrow side board and art would provide balance both vertically and horizontally and make the best sense of the sconces’ location. An electrician could easily flip the sconces, which I think would make a big difference.
