Help! Jack and Jill mirrors and lighting suggestions needed.

Looking to spruce up the Jack and Jill bathroom that my daughters share. Getting ready to paint the walls a blue gray and looking for input on mirrors and lighting. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thinking I may paint the cabinets as well since they are a pinkish color. Please don't judge the mess. :) Like circle mirrors but not sure that's ideal for this bathroom. Help!

Hope the area recovers quickly. I used to live in Glendale.

@katinparadise We were supposed to leave for Sanibel this weekend and we just canceled. I am just not up for so many unknowns, especially with kids. They have special memories of Sanibel since we go there a lot and I don't want their memories to be of people in masks and signs everywhere with warnings. :(

@oreolucca1 I am in Sunset Hills so not far from your old digs. :)

I'll check out that light. Thanks,.

@80sgirlatheart, Sanibel is right down the road from me! I'm in Cape Coral, just west of Fort Myers! IMO, you did the right thing. It's too early. Someone I work with goes there to the dog beach on a regular basis and said they were there last weekend and the place was packed. That's not something I would want to deal with right now. The good thing is, Sanibel's not going anywhere and you've got plenty of time to get your project finished!

On my way to st simons with kids and grandchild. We rent a house every year but it has a pool and is self contained. So we will just in. I had friends at sanibel a couple of weeks ago they said it was busy as well. Stay safe

@katinparadise- That is what I have heard as well. I realize that Sanibel is not going anywhere but it still broke my heart to cancel our flights this am. I am jealous that you live so near there. I was hoping to give my girls a taste of The Bubble Room while we are at home next week but it costs almost $200 to ship a cake here. I'll just have to order them t-shirts or something instead. :) Maybe we'll try to make the Orange Crunch Cake ourselves for an activity. I am going to have to get creative since the pools are closed for the summer here. We may try to bike a lot here and do some picnic lunches with takeout. We may try to go in July. We'll see how things go. The upside of this Covid thing has been the extra time for home projects. It would have taken me years to do all the things I have done recently.

@oreolucca1- Small world! You stay safe as well.

I just had my first in home appt in over two months. Can't say I was thrilled doing it. I wore my mask but had to keep dropping it down because my glasses were fogging up. My client didn't wear a mask. I am anxious. Being in this business is tough when you cant be in a space and I totally understand that if someone is spending $20k on a space they want me there. I feel like I put it off as long as I could. Here in NC everything is opening up and I am not sure I can really put it off any longer without losing business.

I looked at the second gold light Kat posted. I like it but fund it more traditional than the original. I prefer the cleaner lines of the first.

I'm sure all of you were disappointed not to be going. TBH, even though it's so close, I rarely go myself. I haven't been to the Bubble Room yet but I will at some point. I love anything orange so the orange crunch cake sounds amazing. Maybe they would be kind enough to share the recipe with you.

Do you have a spot to set up a sprinkler in your yard? I'm sure you'll find ways to keep everyone busy. It's funny-when we were kids there always seemed to be a million things to do to keep busy. Fishing, tent camping in the yard, building forts, kickball. But of course, that's when we all got together in the neighborhood to play. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's wise under the current circumstances.

Hey-look what I found! The first comment seems to have more of an authentic recipe. https://www.food.com/recipe/orange-crunch-cake-from-the-bubble-room-383779

@Design Interior South I am so sorry that going back to work for you has to be full of anxiety. I guess your line of work is not one that can all be done via zoom. As you say, if someone is spending that much money, they want to see fabric samples, tiles, talk to you in real time as they walk through their house with you discussing what they want. If you can't wear a mask, what about a face shield? I know it isn't attractive but I think that's what some people have been resorting to. Almost a welder's mask of sorts.

@katinparadise Turns out we couldn't have gone to Sanibel anyway. The rental company called today and Sanibel is still not allowing for less than 30 day rentals. We will try again for July.

Thanks for the recipe! We may try that out over our staycation. The Bubble Room is one of our favorite places in the Sanibel-Captiva area. We also love Over-Easy Café.

I bought a giant blow up pool for my kids. That will have to do. I played outside for hours as a kids as well, but that was with other kids. My kids are used to swim team, camp, softball, etc. We'll just have to adapt. We have no choice. The camping in the backyard is a good idea except that we have a ton of coyotes near us. Eek. We'll likely hit up a lot of the local parks that we haven't had time to see before. Get takeout from restaurants that we have been meaning to try forever. Maybe try to learn some new things. Trying to find the positive. :)

For what it is worth, and having raised 3 kids, my youngest just graduated from college last weekend, in the history of our planet, it is only recently, relatively speaking, that kids time had the need to be occupied every single minute with planned activities, camps, sports etc. I myself was the sports mom the Girl Scout mom, the team mom and my kids would go go go. But looking back at my own childhood as well as my kids there is beauty in slowing down. Its okay to be bored. It healthy to figure out how to entertain yourself. I wish I had kept them less busy in hind site. So if anything comes out of this pandemic I hope its reflection and prioritizing and realization.

I wholeheartedly agree DIS. There are so many things everyone can do together as a family.

@80sgirlatheart, sounds like it just wasn't meant to be right now unfortunately. I was going to make a peach crisp for Memorial Day weekend but I may just have to try that cake! I will definitely put The Bubble Room and the Over-Easy Cafe on my list of things to do when things open back up. I'm still staying away from anything but takeout at this point and probably will for a good portion of the summer.

ahhhhh! Look at the difference! WOW! Just wow! The colors look beautiful! I'm so proud of you!

Knowing kids and to keep it fresh and updated I would suggest towel hooks instead of rings

Here are some options from Lowes.

    Wow that looks SO good!

What hardware do you have on there(sorry if you said - I missed it). Those towel hooks DIS shared look great too!

@salonva The pulls are this: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Brainerd-Bar-Pulls-3-in-Center-to-Center-Brushed-Brass-Cylindrical-Bar-Cabinet-Door-Pull/1000191801

Thanks. I have never done a project like this before. I am happy with how it is turning out. :)

@Design Interior South Aww thanks. This wouldn't be coming to fruition without your input and vision. :)

Would it be crazy to have a stand on the sink that holds the towel? The walls look so clean and fresh. I am almost afraid to put anything on them for fear that it will detract from how things are looking.

Thank you for the reply. I want gold as well and am havin g a hard time deciding about the brass /gold. Your slook good and nice to know Brushed Brass is looking good.

I have used the towel stands before and find that they are okay for finger tip /guest towels but not tall enough for a regular size hand towel. Plus thats just counter space lost. I think if you chose a simple towel hook like I posted you wouldnt lose the freshness. Use a towel similar in color to the paint color. Target has some in those color ways or a clean white towel.

Nice work. Amazing how different it looks

I know I have been quiet. :) The girls decided that they want the room with the shower to be Glass Slipper. So, we are painting over the Cloud White. And, I just got notice that the vanity lights are backordered until Jul 20.

  • PRO

Oh No!!!! For what its worth the back-orders are rampant across the board. I am actually surprised if anything is in stock and ready to ship at this point. Andddd I am sure after all your hard work the last thing you wanted to do was repaint the freshly painted walls. Hopefully thats the last "change order" you receive ;-)

I'm just waiting for the light to come in. What else can I be working on now? Perhaps the art for the shower room and a bath mat? I am hesitant to get a faucet or towel rack before seeing the finish of the light. Accessories for top of sink?

  • PRO

When does the light arrive? Definitely time for a bath mat and art. Those should be quick and easy.

Light doesn’t come until the end of July. Girls are now wanting to try some different shower curtains so have held off on art and rug.

Planning to get a new faucet. Is chrome okay considering rest of metal is brass/gold? Also going to work on accessories for too of vanity. Is shelf what you would suggest for toothbrushes, etc?

That counter space is so small I would go with the suggestion above to hang shelves to house the girl’s things they use daily. Also, a pullout under vanity organizer will help. Is that skinny door a linen closet?

  • PRO

Chrome or polished nickel are fine. A shallow shelf will help keep clutter off the counter for sure. Since the lights will face up you will have some room to play with. Consider the idea of doing a glass shelf end to end above the sink but below the mirror. It will be accessible and keep clutter off counter but not be obtrusive in the narrow alcove of the sink area.

@arikay I am thinking to have them put their stuff in a bin and put it in the linen closet so it is out of the way and the sink isn't cluttered. Just soap dispenser on sink along with electric toothbrush. I am afraid that if I hang shelves, things will just be messy all of the time. I'm going to try to find a pull out organizer for under the vanity. Unfortunately the sink bowl takes up a lot of space. :(

@katinparadise Rescheduled Sanibel for late July. Not happening again. :(

@80sgirlatheart, sorry to hear that. It's going to get worse unfortunately. Fort Myers Beach was open for 4th of July and people were flocking over here from Fort Lauderdale and Miami, where things are the worst. And now Disney's re-opened. I don't think anything's going to get better for many months. The whole state needs to shut down for 2 or 3 weeks, but that's not going to happen.

Check Amazon for organizers. There are several on there that may work. I've been looking for some myself and I think you'll find something.

@katinparadise We had a stay-at-home order in St. Louis but that's been lifted. Masks are now mandatory in public places. We still have people acting like nothing is going on though. It's frustrating. We hear July 20th what the St. Louis schools are planning to do....

I'll check Amazon for organizers. Thanks.

No stay-at-home orders here unfortunately. The bars had just opened and got closed up again within a week or so. No mandatory masks here either. People everywhere are in denial. I agree-it's completely frustrating. I believe LA and San Francisco schools have already decided not to re-open. I know it's an incredible hardship on parents but I really don't see how anything can safely re-open. I saw today that one school district was planning on sending out liability waivers for parents to sign. That should inspire confidence in sending kids back.

Hope you find an organizer that works!

Lights didn't work. :( I must have been off with some of my measurements. The shades went too close to the ceiling.

Aw what a bummer. Can you refresh my (our) memory and show which one you had ordered and what dimensions were? Then maybe we can collectively search and keep in mind the dimensions that will work.

So sorry about the lights. This is my favorite place for storage/organization ideas. containerstore.com . Enjoy!

These might be possibilities for you depending on measurements. Just did quick screen shots so you could get the names and look the details up

This last one would mimic the curve of the mirror

Those are great options. Amazingly,, my preference is for #3 which is also the cheapest (that RARELY happens!!!)

@salonva The light I bought had lights that went upwards. https://www.bellacor.com/transitional-bath-lighting.htm?sN=4294967154+4294909831&featuredItemID=2082991

I think I need to stick with lights that go downwards. The lampshades ended up too close to the ceiling.

I would keep the walls a creamy white and paint the cabinet a pretty lighter blue...keep your brushed nickel lighting..add chrome handles to match your faucets and add a bit of sparkle...add some fun wall art...I would add a nice square framed mirror.....

@Home Interiors with Ease I have already painted the walls Glass Slipper and the cabinets Santorini Blue. Both Benjamin Moore colors. The mirror was replaced with a circular mirror that has a polished brass edge. If you scroll up to some earlier pictures, you will see what it looks like. I am having a heck of a time finding a light that is the same finish as the mirror so thinking I might stick with what I have and try to work some chrome/nickel in via the knobs or other. Thoughts?

  • PRO

Looks great...kinda the same idea as I thought...so glad you painted the cabinet light blue very nice...you can always spray paint the light fixture you have...just pick up a few different cans of gold and do a sample board and compare it to the mirror until you get one close..good luck..
