Help with Master Bedroom!

Help! I’m looking for ideas for our master bedroom. I would like to create more of a cozy and stylish space. I would like suggestions for what to buy for furniture, art, lighting and bedding. The outlet above the television drives me crazy. I don’t really want to paint, as the paint is fresh. I typically like more neutral colours. We are on a limited budget and live in Canada. I would love to know where to buy furniture pieces and art. We are in our mid-thirties. Please excuse our bed that is not made - the duvet cover is in the wash. Thank you in advance to any replies! I know some are able to do digital design work which allows you to really envision the space! Any posts or comments are very much appreciated.

What is your budget? Is the pattern on the comforter the same as the pillow shams? When you say furniture, do you mean nightstands and headboard?

I think you have a rally nice start. I would add throw and or extra pillows in a colour that complements your bedding. I like your furniture....clean and classic looking...maybe some cool off white or glass and brass lamps ....wall colour looks nice and neutral

    try wayfair, west elm, bouclaire

Is your bed on the longest walk? It is easier to get a design look on plain wall rather than window walk. But sometime you do not have that choice. Also pictures of walls as you move around room in one direction; ie take pics turning left?

2-3000? Bed is not on longest wall. Hmm. Never thought about putting it the other way. Curious on thoughts with furniture what to buy and what to keep. I thought get rid of all? The shams are the same as the duvet cover.

I was thinking side tables and headboard. Maybe dresser.

Good idea to paint outlet! Or cover up somehow?

I don’t mind the position of bed currently. I like when a bed faces the entrance of a room which looks like it currently does. For your budget I would think of a headboard and taller night stands. The lamps do look a bit small too but may look differently with taller nightstands.
I think you could work with current bedding, and I’ve included a photo of what I think would be a good way to style a bed with patterned duvet and shams. Having a solid neutral blanket or coverlet helps to break up a busy pattern.

Thank you! I think I like the bed facing the doorway or entrance, too. I’m not attached to the lamps, as they are very dated.

I guess I wonder what would give me the most bang for my buck.

    I would get a headboard.

I think the best bang for your buck would be to concentrate on the bed area. Headboard, nightstands and lamps for a start. After that add in some art and accents like a couple of decorative pillows. If dresser is serving it’s purpose you could wait and change sometime in the future. If you need more storage look at nightstands with drawers. They should also be close to height of mattresses.
Are you looking to stay with neutral colours and also what style are you drawn too?

    I like clean/modern/Scandinavian.

If bed is between windows then maybe you should address them too. Long curtains, Roman shades, roller shade. It will be part of your look for the bed.

NOT worried about an unmade bed. Seriously.

WHAT makes you , as in you or both of YOU happy, and can compromise on, if need be? For me, your photos look too gray and depressive for me to enjoy - but they may work perfectly for you. For me, I'd add color. Check between the two of you as to see which colors you'd mutually enjoy. Either paint the walls one of those (probably muted), or have a LOT of accent pieces in those colors you'd both enjoy.

Headboard selection would be first. Possibly a headboard to match wall color as above. Brass, metal or modern leather. Then choose lamps, furnishings and art. Great neutral space to begin the process of redesigning your bedroom. Walls look grayish but cannot tell. What is the color?

What headboards would be recommended? I’d appreciate any suggestions with throws, pillows, etc.

Our walls are a light grey. White trim and doors and blinds. Carpet is a grey/beige.

I’m wondering what you think of this kind of look with a grey headboard and wood nightstands? The grey fabric headboard is from the Brick.com, under $300 for king. The photo with the darker wall is showing nightstands and lamp that are available at structure.com, Also very reasonably priced and good reviews. Lamp available in white also.

Is that a contemporary chair? would it be nice to add color to that area also - as part of the plan? If you find bedding you like, an accent color suited for your dresser could be painted, chalk painted...

If various elements in the house are dark like the doorknobs, maybe you'd like to transition with a traditional red [good with grey and beige I think].

We took this old dresser and painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Florence, then glazed it with a dark stain to add a little distressing.

This type with soft white curtains [as softener for windows]... seems if bed is 'tight' between the windows, a light headboard could work.

Are you diy'ers? If you like Scandinavian you need some wood tones.
if you're handy, perhaps a headboard attached to the wall.
My suggesting to the wall outlet is a mirror over the dresser.
Loved the bedding advice of MarleneM.
    Have fun.

I can feel your excitement! Lol!
I personally think you need to commit to the ‘lead’ item in the room that will direct you.
It could be a room from Houzz you want to copy, a piece of Art where in you use all or some of the colors, a colorful print pillow where again you use all of the colors in the pillow.
I did a room based on a pair of pillows I bought at home good. Very modern paint strokes of large Roses.....back ground was a light creamy linen. Roses done in Hot Coral and Hot Pink with deep Charcoal leaves. Painted room light linen color, linen headboard, Coral and White bedding and curtains, Hot Pink accent chair,
silver metal finishes, cream lamps, medium toned case goods.
It works and when you know your colors you can pick and choose items in those colors as you come across them!!!!!

I just noticed you said clean modern Scandi - does this subtle pattern/texture qualify... ? all so far wouuld be a white - maybe to 'frame' the bed, curtains could have more 'look' ?

    Keri2222,

Your home should reflect your personality and work with the way you live your life.

First step you should take is to spend some time looking at furniture and figure out what works for you and what speaks to you.

I love furniture and love a lot of styles, but none as much as my mid century furnishings with clean lines and beautiful rich teak wood.

My sister's all like something different and each home is beautifully decorated and fits the lifestyle of the people living in that home. But I couldn't use my sister's antique, heavily carved, German sideboard in my home. My teak gondola sofa would look pretty silly in my sister in law's house with all of her country style oak furnishings.

Once you decide on a style buying furniture becomes so much easier! You can window shop and watch for the perfect pieces and buy one here or there with confidence that it will be the perfect addition to your home. In the end you will have a house full of furniture and a home where each room is in harmony with the rest of the rooms in your home.

Second step is figuring out what colors bring you joy and work with your personal style.

If you look at the things you buy there is usually a good bit of a just a couple of colors. We buy things in the colors that we love.

Building your core color palette, knowing that you love blues with coral or teal and smokey purples or deep greens with burnt oranges and golds and deciding on the colors that will be the core of your home color palette will make shopping for furniture and art a lot easier. You will know if something work with your style and goes with your colors.

Everyone here can share ideas for what would work for them, but we need your help to truly understand what will work best for you.

Good call. You are so right. I find it all to be overwhelming and I guess that’s why I’m here!

We have a lot of grey in this house. I’ve tried to decide about accent colours on more than a few occasions. I have a hard time committing and then I get distracted with life (as I’m a full time teacher and mother of a toddler, during a pandemic I might add...) and I’m bad for putting things off. I worry about things becoming dated and that’s why I like greys, whites and wood, as I feel neutrals are more timeless. I like dark forest green at the moment. I like navy and yellow. I think. Thank you for your note @Jennifer Hogan.

Many likes, is a reason to look at photos and gather patterns that they show - for instance, maybe you like green in a LR and/or a room with much wood.... for instance, maybe you could have navy and yellow in another. When we look and gaze at each room's elements, and the permanents, like floor and perhaps a fp, or large interesting windows... that will guide us.

What is truly timeless is having something that is not part of a trend. By choosing the colors you love you will have something that is truly unique and not dated by the popular colors of the day.

Here is an example of my own process for picking colors for my home.

I gathered pictures of a few of my favorite things

I bought a home with red/purple/green slate that I love and will not be changing (excuse the drywall dust

Then I started gathering samples and picking colors. When I thought I was close I took everything outside and put it together. (Natural daylight really helps you to see nuances in colors)

    Here is the combined photo.

My core pallet is smokey purples, teal gray greens and deep reds.

My Neutral is a taupe (beige/gray with purple undertones)

and my white is a creamy white with just a hint of yellow.

Now when I fall in love with a picture of a kitchen I can quickly determine that it may be something I love, but it really won't work in my house with my palette.
