Rats are chewing my drip irrigation lines!

My garden's drip system works pretty well, except that rats love to chew on the main pieces of tubing (0.70"). Each time this happens I have to buy more couplers, cut a piece of tubing out of the system, and replace it. The whole thing is coming to resemble the Tin Woodsman.

The rats seem to like one particular patch of tubing best. It's overhead (running across the top of an arbor) and near my house. I have no idea why that tubing so much more attractive than the stuff that lies on the ground.

Any ideas for discouraging the rats, or for making the tubing more resistant to damage?
