Foundation Plantings / Starting Over

My wife and I have very little plant knowledge and have been researching multiple web-sites for plant suggestions without much luck.

I knew there were thousands of plants and various varieties within each plant family; but didn't realize just how large the sub groups could be.

Quite over-whelming to say the least.

Any and all suggestions would be welcome.
