Help!! Not liking kitchen remodel.

We recently moved into my in-laws country farmhouse (complete with horses and chickens!), which is the home my husband grew up in. It’s 25+ years old, so we wanted to update/remodel, and chose to begin right away. My husband is a builder so we have built and sold many houses, but have never done a remodel. I thought I had everything perfectly planned, but it is just not turning out how I had envisioned. What I am just sick over is our kitchen. Knowing this is our forever home we spent a great deal of money to get a higher end kitchen that would last a long time. And now I just think I made terrible decisions. I love the classic farmhouse look, but also love some eclectic finishes. I was excited to move into our forever home and make it just what we wanted, not worrying about what others thought because we never have to sell it! (Unlike all the others we built to sell.) My husband does everything himself except for painting and drywall.

The problem is all of my colors. I could not figure out what was bothering me about the kitchen, but I think I’ve finally figured out it is the whites. Our perimeter cabinets are Medallion maple white icing, which is not a stark white, but a softer white. We chose leathered/honed absolute black granite for the perimeter cabinets. The island is quarter sawn oak, which we had stained to match some existing wall paneling right off the kitchen of the same wood species. The island countertop is matte quartz, specifically Cambria Newport. And finally, the desk next to the eat-in dining area we had custom matched to BM Caldwell Green. We also painted the great room built-in bookshelves and mud room lockers and cabinets this green color. Our goal was to stick with warm, earthy tones throughout.

Now to the mixing of whites.. I have never liked the cold feel of stainless steel or black appliances, so we went with GE Cafe matte white, and customized the handles/knobs to be black to match our other black finishes. We chose a unique, hand-made cast iron pull for the cabinets and drawers. We know this was a different look, but loved it. Then also went with black for light fixtures. On to another white, for our trim, doors, and ceilings, we went with SW Alabaster, as I had read SO much about how it is a nice, soft white. we replaced all the doors and jams, but painted over some of the existing oak on the windows, as well as the columns between the dining area and great room. One thing I am questioning is whether we should have stained those columns to match the island, and possibly also the window frame above the sink. The paint on the kitchen and great room walls is SW wool skein. We went with this color because it didn’t have really yellowish undertones, and because of its tendency to have some green undertone which we thought would be fine because of our green accents with the Caldwell Green. The stone on the walls in the kitchen/dining area was already there.

We installed hardwood floors throughout the main level. They are European white oak with an oil finish. Specifically, they are Montage Ferno Rhone. We went over the existing narrow, golden oak planks on the great room ceiling with a wider plank pine that we had stained to match the kitchen island and wall panels. We will also stain the fireplace mantle to match.

Keep in mind there is still a lot of construction going on and no decor has been put in place, but it will at least give you an idea. I am hoping so badly that I can get some feasible recommendations to make this all pull together nicely for us. Thank you SO much for your time!

Just stumbled across Mosaic House online when searching green and black tiles...beautiful accent tiles! What a find!

It’s beautiful. Though with the green accent cabinets and the warm wood island, I see matte brass hardware, fridge and range pulls, and faucet. maybe keep the black island lights. Or change to matte brass. I think the white appliances are too white and throwing the look off. There are lots of new colors in the fingerprint resistant appliances. I have seen a fridge with brass pulls but it was white not a creamy white.

agree on appliances, although AN option to SS would be a colored oven maybe dark green.
personally would've used rustic wood shelves instead of upper cabinets by stove
everything else works classic, simple, and warm!
    like suggestion woven wood blinds

I read everything you said before looking at the kitchen. Immediately the appliances jumped out. If I had not read your post I would have assumed you kept the existing appliances. I would strongly consider changing them if possible. One idea since you hate stainless: put matching cabinetry on the front of the fridge. That is the appliance with the most surface area. You could do the same to the dishwasher if needed. Then make the oven stainless since so little of the oven will actually be stainless.
My next thought: the solid island counter. If I could change anything else it would be to add texture/movement to this feature to break up the different whites. With white cabs it is very hard to also have a solid white counter that doesn’t seem off a bit.
Beautiful cabinetry! Beautiful hardware! Beautiful Lighting. Those appliances are dragging your magazine worthy kitchen down!

Love the cabinets, hood, hardware, green feature (you can tie it in with a painted vase, jar or flower pot here or super inexpensively.
Ditch the white appliances if at all possible. Or add cabinetry to the front of the fridge.

Fun color but probably a little much. Need all of us to chip in $$$ ... it’s about $4300 😂🤣

@Aglitter I am very interested and thankful for all of the suggestions I have received. I am also an ICU nurse, working on finishing up my doctorate degree, and have 4 children at home so forgive me if I am not always quick to respond.

Thank you everyone for all of your comments and suggestions. They were so thoughtful and helpful! We are working on switching out appliances to SS, have ordered a wood filler matching the island to wrap the bottom of the hood, and have ordered new island stools. We are also going to repaint the few kitchen walls that are painted, but are undecided on which color, and I’m working on finding a faux Roman shade to go above the sink with some fun pops of color. In the meantime I have been snatching up vintage/antique goods here and there and am excited to start to add decor to really pull everything together. Can’t wait to post a picture once everything is done!

to Belaria, you shouldn't be so quick to judge, not everyone has the time to spend all day on their computer. Some, like Danielle Hodge, are actually putting their lives on the line working to combat the virus.

Thank you for all you do, Danielle, and stay safe and healthy!

Danielle, I am shocked you had the time to do the remodel! Glad you chose some of the suggestions that had a lot of votes. Looking forward to the photos when you make the changes. It’s going to be even more gorgeous!

Danielle: are you even considering a re-do of the backsplash? I was under the impression that changing the appliances was the first move you we’re going to make.

We are not considering new backsplash at this time! These are all beautiful suggestions, we are just trying to change things that don’t involve demolishing something newly installed. We completely gutted this kitchen are doing demo/remodel work to the rest of the main level as well, so demo is not something we really want to get back into if we don’t have to. I’m confident that we can bring in the color that we need through decor!

The cabinets are gorgeous. Changing and appliances and wall color would be marvelous. And wrapping that hood in white oak would be incredible! Your kitchen is lovely!

Hi Danielle, I just wanted to say that your kitchen and home look beautiful! I know a lot of pros can see the differences in the white of the appliances vs. cabinets but I doubt that anyone else will, especially after you have decorated. I think that just adding something (maybe a wreath?) to your range hood would break up the white and create a clearer focal point on that wall. I love your choices overall! Very tasteful and not like every other white kitchen out there!

Danielle, thank you for all you do at your job! Your work makes a difference!

The only thing I can see is the white counter and appliances clash badly with the cream cabinets. Replace the island countertop and spray or buy new appliances . Your problem will be solved

Danielle, WHAT A REAL HERO YOU ARE - I am in awe of all those out there on the front lines saving lives every day. I think switching out the appliances, putting a wood accent on the hood, and getting new stools are really all you need to do. We can't wait to see the changes. It's going to be perfect. God Bless.

Danielle, I was just checking something on my personal page on GW and I noticed that I do keep a grouping of kitchen ideas there, that I hadn't looked at in a long time. It reminded me of your kitchen because it has white cabinets - though they are off white - has a large hood over the stove that is similar to yours and has a center island that is a darker color. Also hardwood floors, but a wood ceiling that is like the one in your family room. I thought you might like a look at it and see how they pulled it together.

And here's another one that reminds me of your kitchen and what you were trying to do with the dark base on your island and the light cabinets. In this kitchen they painted the walls a different color than the cabinets and you can see how that worked out. And they have stainless steel appliances. And they have natural material on the stools.

Hello Danielle, we thank you again for fighting the good fight in the ICU! Any updates? If the answer is no, this is great! I still love your white farmhouse kitchen!

Hey everyone! We still have work to do with decor, but are very happy with the changes we made and where we are at now.

Changes made: switched out pendant lights, switched wall paint to BM Edgecomb Gray, switched appliances to SS (only had switch doors since the rest of the unit is exactly the same), wrapped hood in wood matching island, new stools and added stool cushions, and a faux Roman shade.

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice! Hope everyone is staying healthy! ❤️

Terrific, Danielle! Love the SS appliances and new pendants!

    Enjoy!

I don’t put white white and creamy white in the same room. White appliances add a third white and sometimes have a bluish undertone. If you do a simple window valance or curtains in a print fabric which includes white, cream, some brown and other colors, you may be able to unite your kitchen. Add kitchen towels in a color from the curtains and a couple of colorful ceramic pots for large utensils.

    Very pretty, Danielle!

    1. change your appliances - white versus ivory? nope! and i assume it is much cheaper to change out the appliances ... anything but white or black. colors would be fun. 2) change your black counter top. it looks so dull... simply too black.

Yay! Thank you for coming back to update. I was seriously just thinking about your kitchen a couple of days ago (that green is so dreamy). It looks fantastic and I’m so glad that you were able to swap out to stainless.

    ENJOY!

Your changes are perfect. The wood details and ss refrigerator doors tie it all together!

Loved seeing your changes and glad you are happy with them. I panicked after reading your original post due to our similar choices in paint colors and appliances. Our kitchen was finished this week, and I'm happy so far. The last minute change in granite from Knight White to Aquarium was the best decision ever. We used the GE Cafe matte white range, dishwasher and microwave, but are keeping our SS fridge. Am hoping it works due to the SS trim on the range. The fridge arrives next week. We also added wood trim to the exhaust hood to tie in with the island and shelves and it made a huge difference.
