That big dark headboard will require a big dark "frame" for any Art you purchase.

Definitely not too big! you need something with size so that the scale has enough visual weight compared to the size of the bed. plus large art is the trend these days :)

Not too big at all. But I absolutely would not add another big black rectangle (frame) to the mix. Keep the framing light. Not necessarily in color but in appearance (as below). Also, as mentioned above, pick lamps or sconces with some presence. Bedding wise, you can modernize the look only IF you wish, by adding pillows (just one long lumbar could look smashing on that saturated blue coverlet) and simply folding a top sheet down over the current coverlet.

All in all, I think you are on the way to a very attractive space.

Thanks everyone - So general consensus seems to be that the picture is not too big. I was actually not going to frame the painting that I am getting (Which is not the one in the picture)... just canvas. But maybe I can put a thin black frame around it. That was helpful info about the lamps, thanks. (I am not at that stage yet, but good to know) Bedding... I know, I get it, Lol. I made the bed quick to get this picture posted, but I realize it has a very dated look. ;). I'd probably go for a more billowy, thick, and/ or Tufted.

Note that most of the example “big art”pictures have lower headboards...higher ceilings...therefore bigger open wall space between art ...headboard .....and ceiling

Do you have lamps for the nightstands? If not buy a pair of lamps which will fit your space and then plan for your art work. I think these decisions should be made and then purchased together to insure your scale of lamp to wall to artwork to lamp is balanced.

No, I don't think it is too big at all. It is the perfect size. I would not do a frame.

If it were me, I might even do a little bigger.

threers, I understand what you are saying. And, I can't say that I disagree with that approach at times. But, in this case, there is a particular piece of art that I like and is kind of symbolic to me. So, I am looking more for a place to put it more so than "finding something or anything to decorate a space".

This is the painting I am looking at. A whale, fairly impressionist perhaps. It is 40 by 30 inches.

The painting in my original post was 39 1/2 Long by 27 1/2 high. (the Whale one is 40 by 30, which is what I am hoping to place there... or somewhere else...) lol

I like your painting and I like that it speaks to you strongly. This is how it should be. That said, I don't think that space does it justice. Art needs room to breathe, space to be pondered. By all means buy it and find it a home where it isn't crowded by a bed or too close to the ceiling. You will love it so much more.

I think you are right... it looks a bit too busy and tight with the mock up that ilikefriday did for me. Maybe I could get away with that size with a little less busy look, yeah, definitely agree with your room to breathe comment.

What a larger piece might look like. If this were my space I would play around with a rug on the wall behind the bed, similar to the last photo.

I’m not a pro but it does look like you’re forcing that painting over that headboard. Something else would be better and that great painting needs a place of honor.

The painting is not too big. Whatever you hang should be framed.

Think about where you spend your time in your home ...where do you usually sit while watching tv....where do you work at in the kitchen...etc......then stand there and look for a wall that will be in your view .....that will work for the art ...give it lots of open space around it and a console or bench beneath it so it singles it out as a special piece in a special spot...not a decor piece...then decide whether to frame it..

You have a side wall in that room for a different "fit". Too bad I don't have the mad,fab @ilikefriday skillz ;-) She is so helpful!

There are all sorts of ways to live with one's art. Find what works for you and then plan on moving it about sometimes. Move it when you no longer see it. That is how you "see" it anew.

You have other wall in the bedroom I think would be better than over the bed.

I'm no pro but have you considered a different wall in the bedroom?
