Winter burn or something else?

Hello friends, I’m hoping someone can offer advice. I purchased 2 Kalmia Latifolia pristines last fall and never got a chance to plant them. I moved them into my unheated garage to overwinter in their pots. They were watered 1-2x a month and mulched with pine bark. All my other plants, including two rhododendrons, look fine this spring. The mountain laurels though have hard “crispy” leaves that have turned brownish grey. Are they goners or can pruning save them? They are now on my deck but I’m not sure if i should plant them or if it’s too late.
