Have you seen other Green Giants in your area? Garden centers in my area have been discouraging planting them in zone 5a zones because of a few too many returns then next spring. Planting in 5b was completely reliable...zone 4 may just be a step to far?

starting from 6 inch rooted plants.. GG grew like weeds in my 5a .. in sand ...

of course.. starting that small ... it took a long time to get over my head ... lol ... tree time and all ...

im not sure there is a significant difference between A and B in any given zone ... but i suppose there could be other variables that matter ... like winter wind.. etc ...

Too cold. Mine planted in 2005 in z6 are now near 40 ft tall.

I would be hard pressed to plant in a protected location zone 5a let alone zone 4 in an open area.

These will continue to be stressed and likely die from some other pest due to the weak trees.

HU is in the La Crosse area, which is a bit of a microclimate due to the influence of the Mississippi. I'm about 100 miles north and considered to be z4b. I would think you're at least 5a. I wonder if it's not due to the open, wind swept site??
