Still sewing during quarantine

last modified: 6 years ago

How is everyone doing during this unusual time? I have been sewing every day. I feel a bit guilty that I'm not cleaning more but just can't make myself do it. Without the girls here, it stays cleaner. What have you been doing to keep busy?

My guild has a quilt-along for members only. The president had planned this before the virus appeared. I am using my 30s fat quarters that I received in the guild birthday swap last year.

I am also working on Bonnie Hunter's "Unity" quilt-along.

What is your Covid19 project?

My Covid project(s) is to get all of my completed tops quilted and bound. I have around 10 more full to queen sized tops left. Not all of them are mine. Some are from an aunt who went into assisted living and donated her stash to me. Some came from estate sales. Hopefully this time not able to get out much, I will get them quilted.

I just made 4 more masks for DH from Bonnie Hunter's site. I like this one because you can use t-shirt cording for the ties, I wasn't able to find any elastic. And Heaven knows I have plenty of fat eighth's!!

I've been quilting tops, too. I just have a wall hanging (hand quilting planned) and a table runner from log cabin blocks my mom put together (maybe hand quilted) to go.

Of course, instead of following through with my plan, I started a completely new project last Sunday. :) It's a miniature called 900 Pieces (guess why? LOL). And now DH and I are planning to start exterior painting this weekend, so who knows how long that will take! We are both still working - he's at 40 hours per week and my hours are up and down between 24 and 40.

I have been making masks for one of the senior homes. Up to 200, last batch to be delivered today. I am going to take a short break and clean up the mess I have created but have plans to continue ‘masking’.

I have 7 tops that were pieced quilted and one little boy's quilt started from scratch finished. The mask sewing count is about 125 and still sewing. I am sewing for a group, #MasksNow and it seems like every day there are more requests. I finished painting the kitchen, living room, dining room and hallways in our house. I also started sorting family history books and got some of that finished.

Yesterday, I took DH to the orthopeadic center for x-rays because he fell off a ladder Tuesday evening when we were fixing the garage door and landed on the concrete driveway. The radius is broken near the elbow so are hoping to keep it in a sling for about 10 days and slowly start exercising it. More x-rays in 3 weeks to determine if it is healing. If not, then maybe surgery. Ughh.

I am not motivated to clean house either, but need to do it! I had planned to make a new planter box, but DH won't be using the saw I borrowed so I am hoping my young neighbor will help me. I think I would rather just sit down and read a book!

Sue, I’m so sorry about your DH’s injury! I hope he doesn’t need surgery, but if he’s like mine he won’t follow orders to wear the sling and keep it still. Years ago my DH fell off a ladder and cut his leg. At least he let me take him to the hospital, where he got stitches and orders to stay off it for several days. Of course the next evening he was playing trumpet at some church function and nearly passed out from his leg bleeding.

Sue, I hope he's not in alot of pain, that sounds like it really hurt. Here is to a quick recovery and no surgery!

I am still making masks as well, up to about 80 I think. I am also working on embroidering notable quotes from famous scientists, physicists, philosophers to place in between planetary panels on the space quilt I am working on for my nephew. I hope it turns out like I'm picturing it in my head. So far I am pleased.

    Linda, your quilts are lovely!

Sorry to hear about your husband, Sue. I hope he recovers quickly.

I started out the quarantine quilting, but then switched to masks. I got tired of the masks and wanted to take a break and quilt. I worked on it one day and realized I was getting really behind on everything else, so I haven't been back to the sewing room. I've been out gardening, too. Since I had my knee replacement last June, not much got done in the garden last year and it is a weedy mess this year. I just feel like a rabbit, hopping from task to task!

Linda, love the quilt along. It's a perfect use for those 30s fabrics.

Oh, Sue. I hope it heals. Mom had to a pin put in hers

I'm home from mom's and since hubby works in a hospital, I have been cleaning every day. My house smells like alcohol. Also have been making masks for family while I'm here. Got 19 done today.

Sue, I hope you hubby is not in pain and heals quickly.

Sue, I hope your husband heals quickly and well.

I finished quilting Jared Takes a Wife today. I'm waiting for the fabric for the binding. I've been working on a Pineapple Blossom quilt, and I have 10 of 35 blocs made. I'm doing a little gardening. Our golf course opened Wednesday, so I hope to get out this weekend and play, keeping my social distance from everyone, of course.

Wishes for a quick recovery for hubby Sue.

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy Quilting, cleaning, painting.

Lois, are they allowing players on the course? Our parks and courses are part of the lockdown. My brother says there were some people on the course where he plays who were fined heavily for being there despite their separation from each other.

I made 10 masks yesterday so I'll break off of that for awhile. Unbelievable how something so small and simple looking has so many steps! I've got to go to the post office to mail some to my Sister (she's in healthcare) and I hate to go but I must. I'm so sick of hating to go out and do the simplest things. And about an hour ago I raided DH's package of Oreo's and ate FOUR OF THEM. I never do that, at least not Oreo's. Oh well, I guess it's better than making a martini at 10:30 in the morning. And MY HAIR!!!!! I keep telling myself that if I try to cut it and it gets screwed up it'll grow out but I'm just too chicken. IT LOOKS AWFUL!

I know! My hair is driving me crazy! I can't wait for it to be safe to go out again. I just don't think it's safe yet even though some of the states are starting to open again.

I'd give a hundred dollar tip to any beautician that would cut my hair, as long as they were wearing a mask and gloves!!! (And me too of course.) I don't know if I'll have the nerve to go back to the place that I always go to, the place isn't very clean even when there's no pandemic and the one person who has been there the last 4 times I've gone actually sat me down in the chair and started cutting and THEN announced that she was sick about 6 months ago, so I doubt that she would be the type that would be taking special preventive measures.

Theresa, golf courses are open in central Florida (at least in Orlando). Thank goodness - the hotel chain I work for has a golf course and it's about the only thing making us any money right now.

Linda, I really like your guild quilt and you know how much I like the fabric you have chosen for BH's Unity.

Sue, Hoping Toby will heal without surgery and keep away from the hospital.

I think the thing I'm doing the most during the quarantine is being an armchair cheerleader for all you gals sewing masks, quilting your quilts, and cleaning. I did make 2 masks and have 2 more cut out and I'm working on another UFO. ......yippee for me. :-)

Our golf course opened last Wednesday. As of today, you couldn't ride a cart, but you could pull/push your own cart and walk. Our course is quite hilly, so i watched my heart rate go up and down on my FitBit as I walked up and down the hills. There's no touching anything - not the flag, ball washers, bathrooms, etc. They will start allowing riding carts in May, but only one person per cart unless you're playing with someone in your household. Minnesota is a big boating and fishing state, so the governor is allowing marinas to open for boat launching, but only family members can be in the boat. No salons, restaurants, gyms, etc., can open here.

Lois, Will this effect your routine in getting your sailboat ready for summer?

I made another 14 masks this weekend. I have to start going into the office 2 days per week starting Monday, so I am taking masks for anyone else that might be there. I received a 20 yard order of elastic yesterday, so I was able to make them pretty quick. I spent most of today doing laundry, cooking so that I have something to take for my lunch (I do not want to have to do a drive thru), and cutting pieces for a Tumalo Trail quilt. I have lots of Civil War Repro fabric and thought it would look good in this quilt. I also have the next of the never ending quilt tops in the frame. This one is a Christmas Jelly Roll Race type. I definitely will not run out of projects anytime soon. :)

Sue, I hope your DH is healing quickly!

My DH and I are working from home here, so not a lot of free time to sew, other than I am getting more done since we don't have to commute (which we're loving!). Keeping our routine the same are when we went to the office.

I've made a few masks (and gave them away), but we don't go anywhere but the grocery store. I'm thinking I need to make some more for us since it's looking like they'll be mandatory soon.

But... I'm loving my long arm, and finally getting a chance to use it more! I have a carpenters wheel on there now and using it to learn the Pro-Stitcher. I'm also finishing up piecing some blocks that I won from a lotto. The blocks are called "At the Square" in cream and sage green colors. I'll post a picture when I get the top finished.

I'm doing the final step on ten more masks today, sent 6 to my sister (she's a medical assistant) so she texted me today with a photo of her wearing one of them, saying she was making all her coworkers jealous. The ones I'm doing today are more for my son and grandson since the ones I sent to him they refuse to wear. They all went to DIL and granddaughter. Son asked could I make his with just plain red or black fabric, I said yes I'll try to find some and I told him he is boring.

Sharon, I sold my sailboat two years ago, so I'm not affected. But, the yacht club where it was kept has really stringent rules in place. Most sailboats of the size I had, 22', have to be craned into the water. The crane is not operational yet. The boats are moored close together on the docks, so that's a problem. They have kept the club house locked, so the bathrooms can't be used. Of course, you can't race these bigger boats by yourself, so all the races have been cancelled too. I'm sure there are a lot of disappointed racers out there. At my age, I'm happy to be out on the water in our pontoon boat, which has not been launched yet either. My husband can't put our dock in by himself anymore, and the dock installers are backed up. We hope to have our boat in the water in two weeks or so. It will be nice to be out there and maybe do a little fishing. Of course, a cocktail cruise is always fun too.

W0w you are a busy group of people.Linda I love your quilts, especially the 30's one. I've been tearing my hair out trying to make two pineapple blocks that look the same. I can't seem to keep light and dark in the right order. The problem is that even if you do it wrong it looks great but doesn' match the others. I think I finally have 10 identical blocks and will combine the with the aberrations and call it pineapple mash mash. I did finally attempt a mask over the weekend. It came out alright but my machine had a hard time stitching over the pleated sides and it looks kind of messy. Maybe the walking foot would work better. I have lots of plans for my stash but need some white and other neutrals. My supply is getting low. I can live with y gray roots and messy hair but I should would love a pediciure.

Fran, on my old Singer machine I can sew right over the pleats. On my newer Janome I ever so slightly raise the foot as I go over each pleat. I'm trying to quilt while also doing masks and got tired of changing out the feet, etc. DUH! It finally hit me. Quilt upstairs on the Janome and make masks downstairs in my bedroom on the Singer. I really don't use the Singer anymore, so it took me a while to think of that. :)
