Unfinished Cedar Siding

We are putting up a large barn with knotty cedar T1-11 siding. We want a rustic look and were considering leaving the siding unfinished to weather to a grey. Is there any problem with this idea? Will the siding decay more quickly if it isn't coated with some type of stain or other barrier? Thanks.

T1-11 is related to engineered plywood or sometimes laminated composite (osb) type material. I would not recommend leaving it unfinished, just as ply and osb will warp, age, and potentially rot quicker than solid wood. Although it sounds like your T1-11 is of a higher quality than most (the cedar will hold up nicely) I would still recommend a grey wash/stain and seal that will help you achieve that rustic tone without leaving it exposed too long. T1-11 traditionally doesn't take stain as well as solid wood so I would recommend a test on a left over piece first. Sticking with a semi-transparent should also help.
