kitchen progress! repost!

My first post got so messed up I figured I’d attempt a redo in hopes of help.. ready for painter and can’t decide on cabinet paint. Walls are anew gray.. I have extra white trim so I want a Greige contrast. Looking at incredible white (on the left) and shoji on the right. Thoughts? Or other samples I can order? Thank you!

Try Sherwin Williams Pure White SW 7005.
I have pure white in three of my bathrooms and it really is a beautiful white I don’t think it’s too stark I have it with agreeable gray and alabaster walls.

I like the right. But really impossible to tell on a screen.

Would pure white work with extra white trim?

That’s beautiful! I already have extra white on the trim. Everywhere! So I need an off white that will have enough contrast.. not sure if that would?

    Maybe a little further greige?

Labra- that’s beautiful! Do you know the paint color?

Also... since the island countertop is maple (much lighter than I was anticipating).. would you keep the island painted the same light color as the perimeters or do dark to make the counter top pop? So undecided.. I wanted to darken the maple but it worries me I’d ruin a beautiful piece of wood. Thanks!

I actually really love how your perimeter cabinets look now.

We wanted a nice greige for our perimeter cabinets and went with BM Ballet White. We're really liking how it turned out. Not sure if it would be too warm against your walls, but might be worth looking at a sample.

That’s lovely Kristin! I have to paint.. I had some cabinet repairs made and added on to my island. Clearly still a work in progress!!

Ah, got it. I saw the different woods on the island so figured you'd have to paint that, but I missed the repairs on the perimeter at first glance.

Of the two samples you show I definitely prefer the Shoji, but I can't tell if I'm being influenced by how it coordinates with the existing warm cabinets. I tend to prefer warmer neutrals, though, so I'd probably lean warmer, though.

How do they look with your floor?

Shoji looks beautiful with the floors. My concern is it’s too creamy and blends right in with the backsplash. I just want this room to end up being boring after all this work and expense! I painted the walls anew gray which I love. I was going to paint the cabs that color but worried they’d be too dark.. I have plenty of windows but it’s Ohio so sunlight isn’t exactly abundant!

Lisa would you consider leaving the lowers and pantry on the right in wood and then paint the uppers the Shoji. Then select a dark color or dark neutral for the island. I think you will end up with blah if you did all one light color.

Kristin your kitchen is lovely! And Lisa what Kristins kitchen has that supports all neutral cabinets are the warm wood floors. With your grey floors it’s so nice to have that wood perimeter even if it’s just the lowers.

This kitchen is a good example of 3 finishes working nicely together. I could see your island being a color color.

And if you like this idea the way to really pull it off IMO is to select a color that does match the backsplash for the uppers. This will really calm down the 3 finish concept but still allow you that interest/uniqueness you are craving.

Thank you! But unfortunately it’s not possible. There are doors behind the island that needed sanded from water damage and scratches. Everything needs painted. I’m almost thinking extra white like all my trim. I was trying to do something different.. but maybe classic and timeless is the way to go. With a dark island?

This is a white shelf from another room.. trying to picture what white cabs would look like..

That looks perfect is that your extra right trim color that absolutely is the perfect choice

    Sw Extra white trim color?

It’s actually Benjamin Moore white oc-51 trim paint. Right out of the can. But it’s identical (as far as I can tell) to SW extra white. I always thought white wouldn’t look great with my subway tile but it actually does. Maybe I need to let the Greige thing go!

I'll be honest I think a bright white perimeter is only going to accentuate the fact that your floors are cooler grey and your backsplash is warmer grey. You will be best served to do large painted samples on foam core and set them up so you can see the relationship from the floor to the backsplash (so a strip that goes from under the counter to the floor about 12-18" wide). I tried to find an inspiration pic that had similar colors as yours and this one does have a 'greige' cabinet - and with the grey floors and warmer backsplash do you agree it's a clash and rather 'blah'? It even has the white trim so I see 5 different neutrals in that shot. You be the judge.....

Have you considered having a master carpenter stain the cabinet doors on the perimeter that are new to match the existing? It might be possible - I don't know. IF it's not possible to keep the wood on the perimeter lowers then you might want to pay a color consultant to help you. A whole world of paint options (including the bright white) would open up to you if the backsplash was not what it is or if the floor was wood. Sorry but that's the truth.

Ugh. Yes.. that’s incredibly blah. At this point I just need to paint. What are your thoughts on going dark? I can always paint the kitchen window trim and around the French doors to the deck to tone them down.. without repainting the entire downstairs trim. Maybe?

There are a lot of color consultants out there and honestly it's not that expensive to get a consult. You will get the perfect color(s) probably in just a few days. This is just one to consider and this article may save you from yourself (said with respect because I sense your impatience and frustration): https://mariakillam.com/ugly-costs-the-same-as-pretty/

Good news is it sounds like you are open to light/dark in order to 'make it work'. I scrolled through the above website and I think it's $155.00 for a cabinet color consult. That would be money well spent.

I will search today.. that’s a small price to pay to get this right. Thank you!

Can you take a picture of the patio door? paint the island and patio door a soft black like urban bronze, iron ore or black fox. Paint the perimeter cabinets the extra white. I think this would give you a nice contrast with the butcher block island and make everything cohesive. When you get it all painted and accessorized I think you will love it!

Oh my! That’s pretty much my kitchen! Except for the wood floors, of course :). Here’s a few more photos. I can’t thank you enough for the help. These cabinets are literally keeping me up at nignt! And I just ordered dark Tung oil last nignt because that island top is what I wanted.. mines very light. Any idea what cabinet color that is?

Paint samples are dove white upper left, Chantilly lace on the right and simply white below. And waiting for the light fixture to get moved. Both actually!

When I see the last picture you posted I am feeling that white won't be so bad after all on the perimeter. It looks like your backsplash and current wall color match? If so that does help support the white cabinet concept as the backsplash stands out less as a 'thing'. I like likewhatyoudo's kitchen as a concept for you seeing your family room and how the white cabinets will tie in with the large white window. I disagree about painting the patio door though - I'd keep that white. There is no reason to choose a different white for your cabinets if you go this route - just match what you already have going on the trim throughout. Wouldn't hurt to get a real color pro's advice though just to be sure. The floor tile is a wee bit cooler but maybe it's just disregarded. Good luck!

You have a lovely space what are you doing with your hood above the range? I could see you doing something like this it would tie in your island wood and I think it would really look sharp in your space! I really just think you should do the same white throughout cabinets and trim.

Another nice range hood option if you paint the island black!

I don't know how those range hoods work with the uppers Lisa has - but those are nice with the full height uppers for sure!

I haven't read through every post, but the last where you posted the 3 whites on the cabinets from a distance I would say -- and I know the lighting and all is very wonky--- Dove White looks like the win .

Of course different time of day may yield a different answer!:) what do you think?

Thanks everyone! The lighting was just installed. Can’t remember if it was 3500 or 4000K. They are adjustable so I can play with those. The range hood is stainless. It’s my original but during the Reno my contractor said the venting outside was way to small. Making a larger opening and reinstalling. Although I absolutely love that black hood. Mines a 20 year old Viking so I’m a little tempted :)

I also have black hardware coming and a solid stainless backsplash behind range. That tile looks terrible. The decorative pieces are nothing but grease trappers. I can’t tell everyone how much I appreciate the comments and ideas!

Salvona-I like the dove white too. But my concern is the bright white trim. And what I really don’t want is any yellow hues.. too creamy. I’m finally crawling out of my beige era. Slowly but surely!

Glad to hear that the tile behind your range is not staying! Do you have a picture of the Viking hood?

Here’s the hood. And I’ve spent 2 days degreasing it.. yuck!

This is what I bought. I didn’t have much choice. My current backsplash tile color is discontinued and the grouting would of never matched up anyway. Figured this was a safe bet.

That will look nice. Be sure to keep us updated as you progress. Excited to see the finished kitchen.

    Thank you!!

Thinkdesignlive- you mentioned a website above for color consultants but I didn’t see the link or web address. Can you post? I’m considering it! Thanks!
