Budget Buy Kitchen Cabinets

I'm in the market for a new kitchen. My 80's caloric oven broke and was gifted a 48" viking range and I'm looking to do the rest of the kitchen on a very strict budget. I went to a building exchange supply store and found this set of kitchen cabinets, whose dimensions work with my new u-shaped layout. I will add some open shelving in the areas next to the window above the sink. I know I'm attracted to the $600 price tag, and they are in good condition and well made (QuakerMaid, oak). How do you recommend I update these cabinets? Is there any way to make them look more "now"? Thanks for your suggestions!!

I think it is all in the hardware. Big and contemporary. Then your wall color will make that stove the centerpiece. One of BM’s silver grays.

So Judyg, you're recommending to keep the color of the cabinetry as is, and build around them? What color palette do you recommend for backsplash, granite and wood floor?

Well, I just assumed you would and I think you can. Great hardware (stainless steel), a beautiful wall paint, counters and backsplash would be great.

I was thinking king of painting them altogether- like a gray color. But I'm afraid that it'll look like I'm trying to hide the cabinets, instead of embracing them. The rounded corners and lack of hardware really dates them, so I thought if I used a more contemporary paint color, then I'm bringing them back into this decade. But on the otherhand, I do like the examples you've chosen.

I don't think I can install cabinet pulls because these cabinets have carved out handles already.

May I ask the price? My daughter did her kitchen cabs from IKEA for around $900.00.

I like them - I feel like they can go in several directions with the detailing. Keep natural and they can look mod or country depending on what else is going on. Paint white for a vintage or cottage look.

Gini, I'm actually short a few, so I won't have any over the hood and a few other areas. I thought I'd do some open shelving instead.

Those cabinets look like excellent quality. The cutout handles are a plus, not a minus. The place to put updates would be the lighting and the flooring. The Viking 48" range is already going to make a statement.

For modern I'd do a solid counter like quartz - white would be nice or charcoal or black. I wouldn't do a medium or busy granite personally. I think if you keep everything else pretty sleek these will look updated without needing paint.

Quakermaid keeps records of finishes. If you send them photos, they will be able to tell you if they have matching filler pieces available at the moment. Sometimes you can order new pieces in old color finishes.
