Sound proof wall?

Hi there,

My wife and I are in the process of renovating our house and are planning on moving a few things around in the process. We've got one area in particular that I've not been able to come up with a great solution for and entails putting our tv/entertainment center right behind the master bed. I've tried reconfiguring but haven't landed on an ideal layout. Short of that, I'm wondering if there's an effective way to soundproof this wall to deaden a tv running normal volume to a muffled whisper? Rockwool, doubled sheetrock on either side? Thanks

Use horizontal metal resilient channels or (much better) metal channels supported by acoustic clips between the studs and the 2 layers of 5/8" drywall. Here is a good video.

Don't attach the TV or cabinetry to the wall other than at the top to keep it from overturning. Avoid or carefully seal penetrations in the wall behind the TV and above the ceiling.

Cavity insulation is not thick enough to reduce horizontal sound much but it does reduce the sound that travels within the wall from a crack on one side of the wall to a crack on the other side. However, the kind of insulation is not important but if dense rockwool makes you feel better, use it.

Is it not possible to put the TV on the other wall?

An alternative to resilient channels is green glue between layers of drywall. Green glue costs a little more but there is little chance of an improper installation. Resilient channels, installed incorrectly, offers little acoustic benefit, just food for thought.

Any solution would be ineffective if installed incorrectly. If this is a DIY project that should have been made clear in the beginning.

The goal here is decoupling the face of the wall from the structure. I would rate green glue between layers of drywall as the least effective approach, resilient channels as the next most effective and channels with acoustic clips as the most effective.

Flatscreen speakers often have more volume emanating from the back of the TV than the front. You'll need something to deflect that sound from the wall behind the TV.

Perhaps these panels applied to the face of both sides of the wall could help without having to open the walls.

RES, plenty of data backing up green glue, I won’t get into this discussion with you here.

To clarify, it is much easier to install resilient channels improperly vs green glue, that was my point.

I was not recommending resilient channels but I feel obligated to give the OP accurate information.

According to the manufacturer, Green Glue is "not a sealant or adhesive, therefore fasteners are necessary".

Rockwool and one of many sound absorbing wall material to insulate general sound plus use ceiling speakers instead of TV speakers for sound if you have provisions for wiring,

My own home design allowed for 24" deep bumpout/insulation (since I designed the house) between the 10' wide fireplace/TV section of the wall and the guest bedroom behind although the guest bedroom headboard is on the opposite wall. We have four 6" ceiling speakers in the 12' family room ceiling plus a subwoofer on the floor (which we rarely turn on) quite some distance away from the TV wall.
